This one is so hard! Damn! I have to do a breakdown.

Songwriting:

Mariah > Whitney > Celine

Mariah writes her songs (shes written 17 of her 18 #1s) + has written for other artists, Whitney has co-written 10 songs, Celine has co-written only 5.

Singing (talent + technique + voice):

Whitney > Mariah > Celine

Whitney is a born talent, her belts always have great breath support, her voice is unique and she has a great control, she can however sound a little shrill in the upper register. Mariah has incredible low and high notes, is the song supreme when it comes to whistling and also transitioning from belting to whistle register, utiloyes melisma like nobody else, her voice has however gotten a little coarse over her career, thanks to her nodules she loses control over her voice some days and has a bad techinique in the lowest notes and her voice is weaker than Celine's and Whitney's. Celine has one of the most resonant belts, she can transition from mid-range to belting like no one else, but her mixing in the upper register is uneven and I don't really like the nasality of her tone, but that's just personal preference.

Range:

Mariah > Celine > Whitney

5 octaves 4 notes > 3 octaves 3 notes > 3 octaves 2 notes

#1 hits on BB Hot 100:

Mariah (18) > Whitney (11) > Celine (4)

Sales:

Celine = Mariah = Whitney (200 mil. records sold)

Stardom and stage presence:

Whitney > Mariah > Celine

Everybody knows Whitney and her signature song I Will Always Love You, she is a legend everywhere, when she stepped on the stage she commended everyone and acted as though everything belonged to her and everybody felt her presence, even if you only saw her on the screen. Mariah is best known in the US, outside not so much, however everybody knows We Belong Together and Hero, she has however a reputation of a diva that everyone connects to her and her reputation precedes her. Celine is well known internationally, but some people know her just from Titanic and unfortunatelly can't name any other song of hers, very sad.

All in all:

1. Mariah (3x1, 2x2, 1 tie)

2. Whitney (2x1, 2x2, 1x3, 1 tie)

3. Celine (1x2, 4x3, 1 tie)

Thanks for spending the time writing the analysis!!! Very thorough.

Yeah, I figured this comparison might be more difficult than the last one. All three are super talented!

I had to I couldn't decide otherwise

And I'm still not sure if the list is right :toofunny: Maybe stardom and stage presence should have counted for more than just 1 vote.

Touring goes to Celine as well as her ability to keep her voice since 1990. And I'd also say that her vocal techniques are quite good if you search for clips.

Whitney's voice was out of this world. Truly one of a kind.

As a French-Canadian, I'm proud of Céline but her voice and music were never my cup of tea.

This is a good point. I'd concur that in terms of being consistent vocally (post 2000), Celine has done the best job recently. Mariah has moments where she sounds like she's in 1995, but her performances are somewhat inconsistent in quality. Unfortunately, Whitney's voice was basically gone during her last couple years.

That's true. Mariah hasn't toured a lot - thanks to those nodules, she hasn't been to Europe for 13 years until last year and Celine has definitely toured more than Whitney.

Celine's technique is great, however when it comes to technicallity I don't think anyone can beat Whitney, she knew how to use her larynx, her breath support was phenomenal, etc. Mariah has the upper hand with technique just because her mom is a singer and has taught her since she was little and we have to cut her slack because her voice is fragile thanks to the nodules - thanks to them she can hit the whistle register, but can lack in control, they should be basically removed cause they're not supposed to be on vocal cords, but they;re not pathological so that's good.

Yeah that performance of My Heart Will Go On was great, though pre-recorde, at least she knows how to lip unlike Mariah (she's so bad, I can tell every time, with Celine I have hard time discerning what was lipped and what wasn't). Celine is a fine performer, great vocalist and a living legend, nevertheless.

Lol. I felt that shade :sharon:

In all seriousness, this one is centered around three that are remarkable singers.....Madonna just isn't. Plus, I acknowledged her win in the OP.

She did make some great music, though. Ray of Light and True Blue are fantastic albums.

Zaskar

Whitney all the way!:tony:

Her vocals are distinct and clear. I can understand what's she singing, but with Mariah I have to check the lyrics on Internet and like "oh, that's what she said...I thought it was...". Same with Miss Aguilera.:poot:
