I'm so sick of hearing people complain about "cultural appropriation." I don't understand why people suddenly started getting offended by the mixing of cultures. Especially in this great, diverse "melting pot" known as the United States as well outside our borders in the increasingly interconnected and globalized world. Have you ever noticed that is only minorities that complain about cultural appropriation? It's because they have been taught that their brand of racism is not racism, these self-appointed guardians of culture proclaim that Miley Cyrus shouldn't twerk, white people can't wear cornrows, that you or I shouldn't eat, talk, walk, look, or sound because appropriating elements from one culture to another’s cultures is in itself problematic, failing to recognize that such borrowing is how we got treasures such as New York pizza and Japanese denim—not to mention how the West got democratic discourse, mathematics, the calendar, and how we got breakfast tacos in Texas. The exchange of ideas, styles, language, and traditions across "borders" or "boundaries" is one of the tenets and joys of a modern, multicultural society and the sharing of knowledge is even integral to the progress of human civilization. People need to get the **** over it.

Sell the necklace with feathers to the tourist if you want.

But then don't sell them off as authentic Native American Peace Treaty necklaces when they were made by some kid in a Chinese sweatshop, and not a single cent is ever gonna go to Native American reserves.

This isn't a white teen on Twitter yelling about a white woman wearing a kimono or something stupid and trivial like that. This is a culture of indigenous people, the actual Native American people as a WHOLE, asking that corporations not be able to take their culture, slap it on some underwear, make a profit, and do it again, without permission, or some form of agreement.

It's a reasonable request. If you're so against it, that's your problem, not theirs.

People can't even come up with actual definition of appropriation and someone tries to make it into a law?

Besides this only seems to be a problem in North America? Asia sees things very differently so how does that work out? What about the issues on cornrows+dreads of African-Americans when europeans can argue that the Vikings have also done their own version of "dreads"?

EDIT: I've read the article. It seems fair but the question remains is if passed, how long until everyone tries to claim each and everything as their own culture?
