you're overreacting..... pop music has always been more bad than great, it's just that we're nostalgic about trash from the past

So because a song has Spanish in it, that makes it trash? The reason it's popular is because a. Bieber but also b. Because Spanish is the second most spoken language in the US and is only going up.

:neyde: and your problem is?

Urggh why are people not getting what I'm saying. The song could be in any other language: french, japanese, chinese (my language) etc. I really don't give a damn. My point is that the direction the pop music scene is going for rn is really confused. Not since the Macarena has there been a non english song top the US charts for this long. And are we really regarding Despacito as much of a phenomena as the Macarena, so much for it to be such a hit?

No, I do think it's quite a bop. But I find it confusing how out of all songs THIS is a hit, the so called 'Macarena' of today.

the gp works in mysterious ways :poot:. But the song is an undeniable bop, so it isn't very hard to believe that it's a hit right? Pop stars are not fun anymore. They never reinvented themselves, because 90% of them have no artistic integrity. But the second coming is nigh, I can feel it. :tony:

Yes because Macarena is actually a bad bop :reductive:. Despacito's lyrics are better and so is the beat to it. Who listens to Macarena in their free time wtf? :lolly:

No one, it was just a novelty hit. But I don't see how Despacito is one. It's not like on the same league as other non-english novelty hits like Gangnam Style or the Macarena, yet the whole world is suddenly bopping to it. Other than the Bieber feature, there's really nothing about it that could have made it stand out enough to be an international hit.

I don't think it was implied that the song was from Spain, just that it's in Spanish

It slayed your country's number 1 spot for 16 weeks, though :firega:

Well this is probably how people with a preference for hip-hopish and urbanish genres felt when the charts were dominated by infectious glittery bops and candy-like songs by female singers. Now it's their time of reign, and I join everybody who believes it's a cycle that will eventually be replaced by something else.

As for the Spanish songs at number one, well you have to keep in mind that hispanic population has been a key driver of the USA population growth since at least 2000 - the data from pew research center, if you want some receipts. So it was a matter of time before the young people with Latino descent reached the teen-age and started influencing the pop culture and got representation. The oldest members of hispanic community born in the new, post 2000 wave, are just 17, so most of them are teens, and we know that teens are one of the strongest communities to influence the charts and the so-called general public's taste.
