FinnishGypsy 921
On 6/6/2017 at 3:53 PM, StrawberryBlond said: This is just basic numeracy it's based on, though. I see you're called FinnishGypsy - are you actually Finnish? If so, perhaps this explains why your grading system is of such a high standard. The Finnish education system is the best in the world and its teachers are normally in the top tier of graduates, meaning they're highly qualified. I wouldn't be surprised if the grading system is really high to match the high standard of passing that goes on in institutions. Certainly, we only need 40% to pass in the UK, in most courses. Maybe that explains why so many of us barely pass and then can't remember anything we studied in our degree! Forgetting education institutions for a moment, 50% is generally considered a C, the halfway mark, a passable grade. 50-59% is a wider figure. 50%, 50/50, half good/half bad. Therefore, passable but not amazing. Personally, I use a star rating system when I review albums, including half-stars and I only give marks out of 5. So, 1/5 = awful, 2/5 = mediocre, 3/5 = average, 4/5 = very good, 5/5 = excellent. So, all the little half-marks in between are just that. Translated into a percentage scale, 3/5 would would a 50%. A 2.5/5 is a mark just slightly below average (40-49%) and a 3.5/5 is slightly above average (60-69%). Yes, I'm from Finland, and it does indeed have an excellent education system. However, I'm currently actually residing in the US and attending graduate school here. I'm enrolled in a Neuroscience and Cognition program, and it's pretty brutal. My little brother attends the same university and is also majoring in Neuroscience, but at the undergraduate level. Last semester, he received a 20% on a physics exam, but was given an "A" as it was the highest grade in the class! Personally, I think professors are horribly failing (no pun intended) their students when they use this sliding scale approach to grading. If the content is so difficult that it's actually considered a success story when one pre-med student manages to comprehend 1/5 of the material for a single examination, then what on earth have you ultimately accomplished? In fact, it seemingly contradicts the entire concept of "education" at its core. Without intending to intimate any tone of condescension in the slightest, may I ask how you came to learn about Finland's educational standards? I am simply curious because most people I encounter do not even know where it is located (or often, that it exists at all). I had one acquaintance, (an American, nonetheless!), ask me what state Finland was in. Further, one of my own friends just recently revealed his longstanding belief that Finland was the capital of Sweden. For the entirety of our friendship, he's believed I'm from another country altogether! Although to be fair, we do only have a population of five million, and Nokia and Angry Birds are our greatest exports. Also, thank you for the edification re: album ratings; I've always assumed the "stars" are like grades (e.g., 4/5 is 80% and therefore only slightly above mediocre). I suppose next time I visit Metacritic I'll be far less incensed.
