pie-kun 1,765
Her music was never really not that mainstream IMO. Royals was huge because it was catchy and it fit in well with some of the other huge songs at the time (We Are Young, Somebody That I Used To Know etc.) and got played a lot on radio. I think if you listen to her music as a whole, there's not a lot of other songs that sound like they are radio-friendly and mainstream like Royals was. I think even Team would not have done as well as it did if it didn't have Royals to follow up on. So I never really got why people hyped up Lorde as a huge singles artist and expected her comeback song to do so well. She really only has two notable hits in the US (Royals and Team) and though I love Green Light, it was pretty easy to tell when it debuted that it was not going to be huge. I think Lorde is more of a critical-darling artist that unexpectedly got a mainstream crossover hit much like Florence. I think Lorde will continue to get a lot of attention from music publications and will maintain a strong following but she's not going to be releasing hit single after hit single and I feel like putting that expectation on her is kind of unfair.
