Your statement could easily evolve to "people she see others as humans, not race", and do you know how impractical BOTH statements are? What if they get lost/go missing? But being able to identify people's biological sex is extremely important (i.e. in health treatments), and quite a handful of still don't understand the difference between gender and sex. I just believe things like this can become over complicating, you pass this and the next thing you know we have 20+ gender indentities that serve no actual purpose in the real world. Yeah... that's pretty extreme We need to be able to communicate what genders people appear to be for security reasons. Gender is a construction, it comes down to society and culture really. Once upon a time pink was a masculine colour because it was a derivative of red, men in ancient Egypt wore makeup, Scottish men wore (and occasionally still do wear) kilts that are essentially skirts. Hell, even King Louis XIV wore high heels. Nowadays pink is seen as feminine, makeup is seen as feminine, skirts are seen as feminine and high heels are seen as feminine. That in itself shows that gender is a construction and is totally fluid and changing. There are plenty of people that simply don't fit into the rigid gender roles of today's society. It's not so easy to label them as male or female because those labels come with a set of gender expectations that they might not conform to. Somebody who is female gendered typically present themselves as a 'female' in the sense of what we understand the gender of female to be (generally: long hair, dresses, highheels, makeup). Somebody who is male gendered typically present themselves as 'male' in the sense of what we understand the gender of male to be (generally: short hair, facial hair, muscular, sporty). Somebody whose gender is non-binary simply doesn't fit into either of those categories or doesn't identify with either of those roles. It refers to people whose identity does not conform unambiguously to conventional notions of male or female gender roles, but combines or moves between these genders. We don't seem to have a problem with labelling those who present as female 'female' or those who present themselves as male 'male'. But just because someone disagrees or doesn't understand doesn't mean that you have to be rude to them like I'm seeing in this thread. Acceptance goes both ways.
