A bill supported by Keenan, Star, and more than a dozen other Californians who’ve been granted nonbinary status makes its way through the California state legislature. The proposed law would establish a third, nonbinary gender option on state-issued identity documents (driver’s licenses, ID cards, and birth certificates) for California’s 39 million residents. The whole state — not just a handful of its county courts — would recognize nonbinary citizens. And it would become easier for nonbinary people, bureaucratically, to obtain this recognition. It’s a fairly radical act — a state-sanctioned challenge of rigidly held beliefs about boys and girls and the space in between — and one expected to trickle down to other progressive states, and perhaps beyond.

GGD : any thoughts on this ? :gaycat:

How do you even make a gender illegal?

Anyway, glad to see California remains unbothered by Trump's America.

It's not illegal, but it would be legally recognized just like Male and Female currently are.

The way I see it is there's 2 genders and 3 gender identities, male, female, and non binary/no gender, so yes, I think this is a good move

I approve, but I don't think gender has a place on identity documentation. People should see others as humans, not genitals. Maybe that's too extreme for most people, but oh well.

I mean I don't care if someone is going through something where they are unsure of there gender, there are still 2 genders because gender is just the state of being either sexes

It doesn't harm anyone, so I don't see why anyone should oppose it. It's easy for someone who doesn't struggle with their gender identity to roll their eyes, but I imagine that this will take a burden off of people who struggle with their identity. If I didn't feel like either male or female, I can imagine that it would be extremely emotionally taxing to have to select one.

I love my state

Maybe they could keep gender male/female and add "Gender Identity" on IDs or identification documents and then if you want you can "check" the gender you identify as:oprah: idk just putting that out there, if people are not 100% on board with the idea it could be some sort of compromise :oprah:

A bit off topic but I cannot wrap my head around being non-binary.

Like it's so weird imagining me not feeling male or female 100%.

It's such a large part of who most people are.

I sympathize with these people because I can't imagine how hard it must be to feel this way and have people not able to understand it.
