Is 'The Cure' about Sonja and cancer?

I read on here somewhere that people were speculating that 'The Cure' is actually about Sonja and caring for someone who has cancer/is on chemotherapy. I didn't quite make the connection at first, but the timing of the release of the song makes sense. And clearly the lyrics do... if you listen to the song in this context the whole song is about caring for someone who is ill and saying "if we can't find traditional medicine to cure you, my love will cure you."

For me, this song was badass when it came out because I was halfway through my chemo (had my last chemo this week!!!!!!!!) but now reading about it's potential meaning it really hits home. I love this song even more now even if it does come across as "basic." Thank you Gaga!!!!!!!!! And thank you for speaking out about the horrible disease that cancer is and advocating for those fighting, who have fought, and will fight!

I admit it makes me like the song's message slightly more if it's about helping people who have or have had cancer like you or me, lmao123, but I still am not a fan of the song itself. You're right, the timing makes sense, and it could be that the song has multiple possible connotations, as that's common for songs that Gaga writes.

My guess is that it was not only a song dedicated to Sonja, but its sound might be because of Sonja's taste in music, aka she might have loved closer. Either way, the song is what you make of it, so imprint with it whatever you may like.

I don't think this rumour is true. Sounds to me it was just something fans started to give more meaning to the song and a little more promo. Before Sonja passed away, there had been no connection between the song, not even from Gaga.

no. it was written for the ASIB soundtrack, and is essentially a rejected song that she liked enough to release as a single. Plus, when she performed the song live, she said her fans were a cure to her or something. She's never said anything about Sonja in relation to this song, just fans assigning meaning to something, when there is none.

The indication that we have is that DJWS said she released because she felt she needed to release it. Meaning it's not a lead single to any new project. "Needing to release it" also indicates that it has more meaning than continuing to promote Joanne and my guess is because she knew Sonja's and many other people's time is limited.

I thought it was from "no matter what you know, I'll fix you with my love"; a lot of cancer diagnosis involves trying to understand one's condition and learning to cope . . . so I had an idea that it was about Sonja, but now it's clear. Maybe Gaga didn't want to talk about it because she knew about Sonja's prognosis.

Please keep us updated with how you're doing, I'm glad the final round is over

Yeah but theres also romantic elements in the song and theres no indication their relationship was ever about that

never understood the 'may not have the fancy things' line cause... gagz got our coins.

but now it makes sense because she may be talking about Sonja, and she probably doesn't have an overwhelming amount of money.

Spoiler

but then there's a whole thing where gaga attempted to explain the definition of the song at coachella. .it didn't make sense how it had something to do with little monsters :emma: . i just thought that was what she made the song to be about, after someone had written it for her. she was clearly not as involved in the songwriting of this song as much as with the rest of her discography.

be kind guys
