How many features is she going to have this album? They used to be such a rare thing for her, now she's hitting up everyone like there's no tomorrow, along with using rent-a-rapper (Lil Yachty is on the CTTR remix) and featuring on other people's albums (she's going to be on Calvin's upcoming album). I'd really like to know how many of these were suggested by her because this is quite a turn-around.

I'm so glad that Gaga has said that as a soloist, it's very important to stand on your own two feet for the most part. She rarely does features and it means her hits are so much more meaningful for it because she didn't have to rely on other fanbases to pull in the sales. After all the problems she had with getting a hit during AP, it was so brave of her to put out Perfect Illusion with no features, even though she could easily have put a Mark Ronson tag on it to increase interest. All her lead singles are completely solo, apart from Just Dance but does anyone even realise that this song has a feature tag? And it was hardly like they helped the song be big. Gaga takes such risks by doing this, I really respect her for it.

It's ballsy. Look at Rihanna's recent hits. Work was featuring Drake, and TIWYCF was featuring Calvin Harris. Katy and Ariana are also relying heavily on features to some degree. Gaga could've even featuring Zedd on G.U.Y to get a hit but didn't. Her only notable hit with a feature (Just Dance doesn't count imo) was Telephone, and that's in part because of how much of a cultural moment she made it with the video, outfits and performances. I always laugh when Rihanna stans drag Gaga's under performing singles when Rih's own solo singles have been struggling recently. FFS featured Kanye and Paul McCartney. Even Sia gained credibility by featuring Sean Paul and did a song with Pink. Gaga is the only female pop act willing to stand on her own two feet.

I am of the firm belief that Work wouldn't have been a hit if Drake, the most popular rapper of the moment, wasn't on it. If it was solo, it probably would have been another flop and the whole Anti project wouldn't have taken off. She did that collab to ensure she finally had a hit to kick the era off. It's like she didn't want to properly start it until she had the obligatory BB #1 lead single. This is partly the reason why I just can't respect Rihanna as an artist, no matter how involved she is in her writing now. A true artist cares about making a great song with impact, not a trendy song with a hot feature to get a hit in the here and now. Rihanna profits greatly from being an urban act (especially since 2011) because that means that collabs with rappers and RnB stars whether on her own songs or theirs is par for the course, meaning she has multiple opportunities for hits and to keep her name out there. Being a pop act means your collabs are a lot less frequent.

It's a sad fact that females have started relying on features more and more to get their albums off the ground now or to maintain any shred of relevancy. It's a means of survival right now with the public being so cold towards female artists at the moment. The only females who seem to be ok with putting out songs without features is the lesser known, lesser successful ones. But ironically, the biggest names are the ones with the least confidence in their work to sell it on their own merits. In a sense, I wish Gaga would collab with somebody so that she could entice more people into finding her cool and liking her again but at the same time, I don't want her to sell out that bad. And it makes it all the more sweet when she can continue to get hits completely on her own.
