Walk down the runway but don't puke, it's okay. You just had 10 donuts today. Without frosting.

She was rumored to be a judge a few years ago but she declined.

Wonder what will happen this time.

Truly the paula abdul of our generation

But Paula truly excelled at something (dancing). She can always claim to be the best dancer & choreographer out of her generation of pop stars.

What can Katy claim, from a talent perspective?

I'm really not trying to hate but Katy has a lot of work to do on her voice if she really wants to start judging people who want to become singers. Sure, she has the credentials to give people performance tips but NOT as a vocalist

That J

The last thing we need is another show designed to give us another celebrity.

American Idol was cute for 3 seasons.  That was plenty.

American Idol's being revived? Give me strength. I know it's just a rumour but if Katy really is in talks, she cannot even contemplate this. It'll be the ultimate kiss of death. The only singer who's ever taken part on any of these shows as a judge who was early into their career/very successful was Nicki Minaj. International versions of these shows seem to differ in that the roles are normally given to the most current, biggest artists in the country at the time (Jessie J) or previous band members who are trying to launch a solo career (Cheryl Cole, Tulisa). But the American versions of these shows have a very clear idea behind them - the judges are artists who are in desperate need of a career boost. Nicki (and possibly Pharrell) was the only exception to this rule. It's a theme to make fun of now. It's these artists way of announcing: "I want to maintain my fame but making music is no longer at the top of my list anymore, so seeing as I've got all this free time on my hands, this show can keep me around." After all, it stands to reason that if you're putting an album out and all the things that goes with that (music videos, the promo trail, touring), you can't commit to a show, which leads to the ridiculous situation of The Voice judges taking a break every other year, even though they don't put any new music out in their break!

Katy can't do this for the sake of her reputation. She can't go from her second biggest era to this. 4 million selling album worldwide, 2 massive smash singles, a world tour grossing over $200 million...and doing American Idol four years later. Either this is a bad wind-up or she's that desperate to be relevant again.

For some laughs, here was Katy being a guest judge on X Factor UK the year that 1D were formed. Here she is judging Niall Horan. He got through all because her 'yes' vote alone tipped the balance - bet he thinks she's one in a million. I want to point out that it's so funny what Katy says about what she thinks sells records and suchlike:

It's just hard to take her seriously as a judge of this stuff, huh?

Y'all act like successful people have never judged a show before. Adam levine, Miley, Nicki.... doesn't mean her career is over

Apart from Nicki, they were going through problems, though. Adam started judging after the release of Maroon 5's biggest ever flop, Hands All Over. Their career seemed to be over, so he took the role in the hopes of revitalising them (and boy, did it). And when Miley judged, she was in a downward spiral after her release of Dead Petz and the public weren't shocked by her antics anymore and were moving on. Don't even get me started on how much Xtina and CeeLo were flopping when they became judges as well. Same for Gwen (no album since 2006 and flops with a reformed No Doubt) and Shakira (no US hit since 2006). These shows are just a vehicle for artists whose careers are in trouble.

Guest judging is completely different from full-time official judging. A guest judge only does one episode or a handful at most, usually the audition stages. Nothing that would involve any real commitment, work or getting to know the artists deeply. That's why the biggest artists can do it if they're in town at the time. Katy even filled in for a judge at the audition stages of X Factor UK, as I said above. It happens.

What do you guys think?? Good move? Bad? Personally I think this only helps men's careers (ie. Blake Shelton and Adam Levine on the Voice)

Past women haven't fared well from judging on talent shows (Christina, Gwen, Shakira, Mariah, Britney etc.)

Discuss.
