SADE / LOVE DELUXE

-----◆-----
In the early 1990's, the music scene was marked by the dominance of New Jack Swing and hip-hop music. A group from the United Kingdom had supplanted their influence on the industry since 1984, but they were on the verge of creating an album for the ages. Their fourth album placed them in esteemed company. Sade’s Love Deluxe would be the only album the collective would record during the decade of the 1990s. They became known for their distinctive, hypnotic sound that mesmerized even the most casual listener. They blended jazz, bossa nova, soul, and some of the swollen negative space of dub into a sleek and buoyant composite.

-----◆-----

There must have been an angel by my side
Something heavenly came down from above

He led me to you He led me to you
-----◆-----

Recorded with her immensely dextrous collaborators Sweetback, the album predated trip-hop by a few years, and clearly had an influence on that genre’s seminal artists such as Portishead, Massive Attack, and Tricky. Sade's 4th studio album, released in 1992 titled Love Deluxe was certified 4x Platinum in the US. The immaculate lead single 'No Ordinary Love' is considered one of their signature songs and won a Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. On that 1992 smash single, Sade Adu and her band told an emotionally haunting story about a love that was beautiful but unhealthy and, by the end, all-consuming. Yet despite the dark overtones, the song felt like floating in the midst of a Quiet Storm, cushioned by the gentle, warm enunciations that were Adu's trademark. In my opinion, “Pearls" is—if not—the best song on the album.

DEADLINE: May 10-June 2

It's one of my favorite albums too, right after Leon Ware's Musical Massage.

I'm a little bewildered at how instead of knowing her two biggest hits (Sweetest Taboo and Smooth Operator) you know By Your Side:laughga: I'm sure you'll love this album as much as I do.

:sharon: I have no clue, someone showed it to me loooong ago and I've always enjoyed it but never really looked into their other songs! None of the other songs you've listed have rung a bell at all so it'll be a genuine first listen :music:
