I'd argue that he's definitely put effort in, he's gone out of his way to produce stuff wildly different to his recent previous stuff and he's played instruments as well as producing the sounds on computers so I think the effort is there. He first started with funk/disco, but then shifted to electronic when it became trendy. But then it obviously died down since last year *cough* TIWYCF *cough*. Slide and this rubbish is so bad. Frank Ocean has a very good reputation when it comes to Lyrics. Its just the beat that he is rapping/singing over is trash. Most music nowadays is made using real instuments, its just enhanced in some way when they produce it. Look at Joanne for example TIWYCF was trendy, yes. But it smashed not because of good lyrics, but because it had a beat that you can bop to that sounds fresh, current and dancey. It was a good summer bop. These songs are what he started his career with. Acceptable In The 80s and The Girls were part of his debut album 'I Created Disco'. This sounds nothing like what he is doing now, so how is he going back to his roots? Slide and this trash, Rollin, are awful. Just really really bad.
