StrawberryBlond 14,376
This is her biggest flop this era as of yet and is her biggest flop of all time. Katy has never had a single that failed to go top 40 at least (and she only has 2 of them as it is). Problem is, there's no way she and her team can abandon it now. The video's been shot, it likely has all those late May promo slots lined up. They're just going to have to waste it on a dud single instead of promoting something that could actually be a hit now. That sucks but it's just the way things go. Katy is now realising that she can't have it all and it might finally put her ego in check and make her realise how much of an easy ride she's had. Maybe we'll even get better music out of this. But for now, I can't even imagine what she's going through. She probably doesn't even want this video released because she knows how many dislikes it's going to get. The audio alone has over 40k dislikes which is unheard of for a big name in pop. She's probably wishing her team will pull a DWUW and not release it but I doubt they'll go that far. 1 hour ago, Delusional Aura said: What's the problem with the UK though. Artists always seem to not smash on that particular market It's not like that so much anymore now that streaming has entered the equation. But even with that, because America has such a big population, there's so many people to get the song to and radio stations from New York to California take time to catch onto the song and add it to their playlists. It takes a lot longer for the song to spread and spread to the fullest extent. Before I really started researching charts, I could never understand why songs in America stay at #1 for weeks and months. But then I slowly got it. Because the UK has a much smaller population, songs don't need the push to spread to the fullest extent. By the end of its debut week, most of the fans of that song's community will have heard it. Before streaming was brought in, it wasn't unusual for us to have a new #1 every week. 2014 was a mess, so many songs going to #1, so few of them by relevant people, so few of them having impact once the year was over. We also had that awful pre-order system from 2012-2015, which made a mockery of the charts. It meant you could 'buy' the song 2 months or more before its official release but the sale wouldn't count until then. It was a way of labels cheating to get their artists songs to #1. Making them go to the top effortlessly by sailing on 2 months worth of pre-orders. Luckily, the system no longer had its intended outcome within 2 years of it coming into play. I think the public got sick of the unfairness and how the weekly charts technically weren't weekly now because sales from previous weeks can be accumulated into one week. This system was partly why Gaga couldn't get #1's during the AP era. She could have gone even higher in the charts if she'd put Applause on pre-order or wasn't getting blocked by pre-ordered singles. Thank God that system ended and Gaga never had to sink that low. Roar was one of the very first to be put on pre-order, by the way, which really stings. But now, because of streaming, songs can be at #1 for as long as they are in America now. 2016 was a year unlike any I'd ever witnessed because we only got a handful for #1's the entire year. UK charts are like American charts now. It's good in some ways, a bit boring in others. But Katy was complaining about nothing when she was whining about E.T's low position. That song went on to hit #3 in the UK. She just couldn't take the initial low position which is weird because as an American, she should know how starting off low is par for the course. Back in the day, if your single didn't hit #1 on its debut week on the UK charts, it was practically a guarantee that it wasn't going to ever stand a chance in the future but it's not like that now. 1 hour ago, Bear said: This is all true, but I also feel Gaga was suffering from a complete image problem where a lot of people still saw her as "the meat dress crazy girl" which made a lot of people actively dislike her. As you said it took a hell of a lot work from Gaga (C2C, Tribute performances, SB etc) to fix that . On the other hand I don't think Katy is necessarily disliked right now, just that no one is interested in what she is doing. In theory it seems to me like that is an easier problem to fix -I think with some careful thought and re-invention she can get over this. It won't be easy, as you said, because she doesn't necessarily have the same set of skills Gaga has to pull certain projects off. Herself and her team though are usually very clever, I'm sure they'll think of something! Well, I don't think Xtina was disliked in 2010, people just didn't like the music she was making. And look how that turned out - Bionic ended her career and she's only got worse ever since. When the public falls out of love with you, it can be so hard to win them back, especially if you're female and over the age of 30. Its been done before but only by those with amazing talent or amazing marketability skills. Katy's team sure have marketability skills but she marketed herself on being a young girl who made fun music for the youth market. Now she's older and making music that isn't appealing to the youth, what can she do? She can't make herself younger, she can't pull off that old bubblegum style anymore. And the public have never been truly here for her ballads. She's in a catch 22. It's going to be interesting to see what her next album provides because I don't know how she's ever going to claw her way out of this one.

She had such good momentum and success throughout her career but Bionic did break that, and she hasn't really fully recovered since- despite having an amazing voice and changing her sound and image a few times. You're right, it will be a struggle for Katy to get over it. I hate the idea that how the perception of success breeds more success, and how one commercially wrong move can ruin you for good, regardless of what you do after it. 15 minutes ago, StrawberryBlond said: Now she's older and making music that isn't appealing to the youth, what can she do? She has unfortunately painted herself somewhat into a corner as they say. I think the problem is she didn't grow with her fans, and will now struggle to captivate new ones. I like to think where there is a will there is a way though, and I hope for her that she does get out of it- albeit a lot harder than I probably first realized.
