Hard, If It's Lovin' What U Want, We Ride, Rockstar 101, Man Down, Princess of China, You Da One, Pour It Up, American Oxygen, Kissed It Better and album sales say hi.

I recognize and like most of those songs. I think Rihanna has a lot of huge hits and a substantial number of smaller hits that are hits nonetheless. I don't think it is fair to say that something is a flop just because it doesn't do as well as the last song or just because it doesn't chart in the top ten. Were the songs on Cheek to Cheek flops because they didn't even chart on the Hot 100? No. Why? Because they weren't intended to. They were never pushed to radio. It was pushed as a passion project and it drove album sales. I recognize that Rihanna is different because everything she has ever done has been pretty explicitly commercial, but I still don't think it is fair to take every song she has ever released that has not been a top 10 hit and call it a flop.

The reason I think Katy Perry's CTTR is a flop is because it was promoted hard as the lead single of an artist of a major pop star, and its metrics were very weak. It was a flop because it was shoved reluctantly to substantial heights and then when the supports were finally dropped, it came smashing down. It was built for pop radio, according to the formula. It was intended to be a smash hit. It was pushed hard to be a smash hit. Most of the Rihanna songs you are referencing are just album cuts or late singles from albums that had already run out of really big hits to chart. Some were promoted more vigorously than others. I'm sure it is fair to say that some of them flopped (American Oxygen, at least). But Hard was a top ten hit. If It's Lovin that you Want was her second single ever released and it peaked in the top 40 on the Hot 100 -- that is not ordinarily what you think of when you say flop. Plus, it was followed by a #1 lead single from Rihanna's next album. "We Ride" is probably a flop. It didn't chart in the US as the third single from an album with 3 other top ten hits. Rockstar, sure, but again way late single in an album packed with hits. A flop in the way that Marry the Night was a flop. Where is Te Amo on your list anyways? Your list of damn good album cuts, that is? Princess of China was a top 20 hit, and it wasn't even on a Rihanna album. That's pretty good for Coldplay.

Anyways, overall it doesn't matter because Rihanna still regularly releases songs that are big hits. Ergo, she is still valuable to her label & her label won't stop investing in her (making it harder for her to score hits), i.e. deleterious spiral (which may or may not have been a problem for Gaga in recent years).

Married the Night

I'm happy to see TC going up on iTunes. Hopefully streaming and radio stay strong.
