I've lived on my own on low wage jobs, and I'd still barely make it at $15. It needs to happen. It would be fine. No it wouldn't. if the minimum wage was raised to $15, I would have to fire employees. I barely make a profit myself because of regulations, taxes, and fees. I also spoke with other small business owners who hire a lot of employees and most of them agreed they would have to scale back on labour. You are talking about small business owners losing thousands of dollars GGD Presidential Elections

The US is at 4% unemployment. That means that it's very, very difficult to replace someone. So no, this wouldn't really affect jobs that much. If everything will become more expensive, I don't know. I think a minimum wage hike could definitely affect inflation. 41 minutes ago, Colemonster86 said: No, if you've ever taken an econ class EVER you would know that $15 an hour is a really bad idea. And Just an FYI there is no federal minimum wage in the US it's solely based on what the states set, but the federal government bribed the states to set it at $7.25 as the bottom line. A $15 minimum wage would cost 300k jobs. That's not that many TBH. Increasing the living standards for so many people is worth it the small job cost. At the same time productivity will rise significantly, because in some sectors it's just too difficult to hire someone at such a high cost, and they'll get machines instead, which can be a good thing when the country is at full employment (which means that it's pretty easy to find a new job). MJHolland 12,725
OK but how do they know what the best minimum wage is for the whole country? Yes a $15 min wage might be great in cities like Seattle or states like Vermont, but it could be deveststing for poor areas of the south (like Alabama) where small businesses can barely pay the current min wage 1 hour ago, vivre sa vie said: So how much is the daily wage at the momment in the US? There isn't one because each state sets its own really, that's how it should be. This bill demonstraits a huge lack of understanding of the individuals needs of each state. The Australian dollar is worth less than the American dollar. Also, McDonalds, WalMart, ect. aren't jobs that are supposed to provide you with enough money to provide a generous lifestyle with your family, they're meant as an entry level job that provides teenagers with experience. The reason CEO's make so much money is because they worked their a**es to to get in the position that they're in and ultimately they have to make the tougher decisions in order to keep businesses up and running giving people jobs. Is that why all of these stores/chains are open during school times? Maybe Republicans should forbid that if what you're saying is true! The truth is, there's many people who are simply not capable of doing a job that requires a lot of thinking. Factories and small services are intended for those people. Saying that everyone would have a college degree in a perfect society is true, but you know that's not happening. The truth is that there's plenty of mothers and fathers who fail to make enough money for themselves, while CEOs and shareholders of the very same company continue to get more and more (undeservedly!) Maybe a maximum wage isn't a bad idea after all.

The unemployment rate is not as simple as just saying 4% We have record low workforce participation, which greatly has underestimated the actual unemployment rate. You were looking for quotes for your yearbook and "writing for your school paper". For the next eighteen months, all that you talked about were classes that you were taking. Who calls a college level History class "Social Studies"? Did you start a small business in your eighteen months of college or are you working at Daddy's business? (Or referring to that all along) I do know a couple of people who had something like a very small landscaping operation ( with 3 people) by the time they were Sophomores in college. I also know a girl that got a small clothing shop business given to her by her Daddy because she couldn't handle the classes.

Of course, some CEOs (like Bill Gates) aren't greedy at all. They see that they, in hindsight, don't need billions of dollars. However, most CEOs - especially those on top of banks - are easily replaceable and don't contribute to society and thus do not deserve a wage higher than, say, 500k. Hell, some of them earn over 10 million. You're not going to tell me that these people literally worked 10000 times harder, because that's impossible! These people were born with privilege - they had their daddy's contacts helping out, they had daddy's life lessons helping out and they were born with higher intelligence. Did they work 10000 hours a day instead of 1 hour a day? That's impossible. I'm not going to deny that they worked hard to get where they are, but they sure as hell aren't skilled enough to be making such a shitload of money and they sure as hell didn't work hard enough to be given such a wage. Now let's talk about investors and shareholders. If you have 5 million dollars invested with a 3% dividend, you can basically sit all day enjoying your life while earning 150k a year. Did these people work hard? Contribute to society? Did they deserve such a high reward? Because that's where a lot of the money goes to, rather than those who work for the company at the bottom. but back on topic, nobody deserves to live in poverty. A 15$ minimum wage might be a little too high, but $12 or $13 should definitely be considered in 4 years from now (unless there's another crisis, yuck).
