Luiz 4,253
Sen. Bernie Sanders supports Ann Coulter's right to speak at the University of California-Berkeley, and told The Huffington Post that attempts to shut her down are a "sign of intellectual weakness" amongst some of her critics. Sanders made clear that he is no fan of Coulter, but nevertheless believes students who want to hear speak deserve that opportunity. "Obviously Ann Coulter's outrageous ― to my mind, off the wall," said Sanders. "But you know, people have a right to give their two cents-worth, give a speech, without fear of violence and intimidation." Berkeley administrators recently cancelled Coulter's upcoming visit because they could not guarantee her safety. Protesters had threatened violence and rioting if Coulter should appear. ....... "What are you afraid of ― her ideas?" asked Sanders, according to HuffPo. "Ask her the hard questions. Confront her intellectually. Booing people down, or intimidating people, or shutting down events, I don't think that that works in any way." http://reason.com/blog/2017/04/22/bernie-sanders-says-ann-coulter-has-righ I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it. venusfly 17,885
bernie cancelled, this is literally a woman thats referred to people as fa*s and intentionally says offensive stuff to rile people up. She deserves no platform.
Eighteen 5,430
bernie is ultimately right imo. i think hate speech/ignorant made up speech what have you should be met with debate rather than intimidation and violence. but at the same time, i can understand where the university students are coming from in a way. we are in a post-fact world where people really don't listen to one another and will spin and spin their truth until hell freezes over without any concern for what's rational and plausible and factual. it's difficult to debate under this kind of blind-adherence environment. lego 44,165
Why would they need to give her platform? She can go to Stormfront, Breitbart or Fox and spew her hatred, also she can invite those students who are interested to her home and give the speech there. Sorry Bernie, but you are wrong. If she would be keeping antisemitic speeches no one would talk about "free speech" and "what are you afraid of, confront her ideas" bs. lego 44,165
Is it right or is it privilege? Can any neonazi group keep speeches there? Can radical preachers keep speeches there? FreePalestine
TheCure 125
I love Ann. And I love the First Amendment. NO EXCEPTIONS! Thousands of men died for this right to free speech.
Morphine Prince 109,645
He is right. And legally she would win. This is not Europe where there are hate speech laws that would probably ban her lmao. HOWEVER, I obviously don't think Nazis should be allowed to speak at events and they probably would not even be invited or anything. We need better laws. I hate her but technically she has every right. It is ridiculous that we can't even have different opinions in this country anymore. The conservatives just yell "snowflakes" and the liberals just yell "hate speech" How about asking her the tough questions and making her look stupid as she is? It's better to expose these people for what they are than to shut them up. They feed off uneducated conservatives thinking they are opressed.

John Stuart Mill, the Magna Carta, and the rivers of blood spilled by our ancestors gave us this amazing right to freely exchange ideas. If you don't value it, go live in Saudi Arabia.
