President Emmanuel Macron already spoke on the phone to Chancellor Angela Merkel this evening!

I look forward to a very good and close cooperation between France and Germany.

Was that this evening? Thought it was old

there appears to have been some friction between the two earlier on. Macron believed Greece should be given debt reductions, Merkel disagreed and (successfully) removed him from the negotiating team :laughga: but I think they're okay now

shocked at 25-34 tbh. Also 18-24 higher than I expected. Probably due to abstentions? Also worried about the old people. Macron better give these old sweethearts some extra healthcare.

american religious people should take notes

I prayed for you guys all night tbh  Though I know Macron isn't perfect, I hope he brings you all some kind of hope. Also, yay at avoiding bigotry and ignorance and far-right wing populism :applause:

Now if we can just follow Germany in the next months

Long live France! Thank you for showing the world you will not tolerate fear mongering and Russia using hacking to destroy the West.

Cheers!

The EU needs France more than France needs the EU. Th misconception amongst those that want to remain in the EU (Stockholm syndrome en masse) is that it will somehow stop tourism.

It's a good job the USA is part of the EU then or they'd never visit France.  Oh wait.

You don't need to be in the EU to have tourists from within the EU visiting. You can, however, have much better terrorism prevention if all visitors have to be checked like if I went to America or Australia etc. It's not a hassle to do and ensures better terror detection. Where's the down side?

France would also open itself up to trade deals with USA, Canada, Australia,  China & Japan. The USA alone is a bigger and better trade partner than the EU purely from a value perspective.

The EU is nothing more than a pair of shackles that nobody voted for.

Closing borders will be drastic. Europeans are 'spoiled' by having open borders. Going to France is an impulse mainly. I can simply get on and off the TGV,  or just drive in, no queues, no nothing. As I presume most tourist traffic into France from Spain, Germany, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands is by train/TGV, it'd be so costly for each state to make special departure galleries for France. Nearly everyone I know doesn't take the train to London because of the check-in and border hassle.

And also it's so pleasant when your staying near a border that you can just cycle to the other country and spend the afternoon there. Forget it if it actually involves crossing a border.

So closing borders will be a major turn off for the neighbours that go and naturally end up spending money there.

But I don't think Le Pen would manage to do that at all tbh. The economic loss would be too great. I prefer Le Pen over Macron personally, but her referendum to leave the EU, borders and the franc are way too far fetched. I'd support a renegotiation like Macron says. And 10.000 immigrants a year seems impossible as well, it has to be restricted from now on I believe. Because I think the marginalisation of the maghreb and muslim minorities has to be resolved first; by letting more poor immigrants from a very different culture in when you've got this problem will just make things worse.

Spoiler

waiting for those to call me racist for preferring Le Pen in 3...2...1...
oh and btw I am mixed race (white-latino) and lived in Australia, Chile, and now Belgium and have travelled to 33 countries in all continents + witnessed the Maelbeek attack, i'll just sit back, take my popcorn and watch over your ignorant comments about me.
