Not to compare Americans to the French, but people will follow incompetent people no matter what. And that obviously showed when the US elected Trump.

What got Trump there was his charisma and his skills as a public speaker - it hurts for me to say this, but there's always a good reason for people to vote for somebody. Hitler got elected democratically, and he's always been pretty clear about what he wanted to do once elected.

Well, whether you like it or not, it helps. I would personally not be ashamed of having a young, dynamic, good-looking, fluent guy to represent me and my country internationally. And if he were totally incompetent, he wouldn't have gotten this far in the race.

The media and the elite did everything they could to make Macron go that far. Competent or not, French were easily manipulated into voting for him.

Omg they're only making it worse and they are only making the FN voters think that they are right. :saladga:

This argument is getting pretty old... There's always a million things that influence our decisions at every moment of every day - the allotted speaking times in the media have been thoroughly respected, and now people have chosen.

Also, the "elite"... please, let's stop with that word. All those people are from the elite. Even Marine le Pen, who is the first to speak against it, is from a dynasty of rich politicians and has grown up in the family castle away from the "real world" that she pretends to be representing, so let's cut the bs for a moment.

Except Trump has reversed most of his campaign promises and/or has lied since the beginning. I wouldn't consider him a skilled speaker. People are just gullible. There's never a good reason for that.

Trump has no skills as a public speaker. What got Trump elected was a combination of circumstances that jut doesn't happen very often. Hitler was not elected democratically, he never got more than 40% of the vote even though unemployment was at 30% at the time. He also wasn't clear about what he would do with jews/gays/gypsies/etc. 'Wir haben es nicht gewusst!' (we didn't know about it!) is a well-known phrase from post-WWII germans.

Macron is going to win. I just hope Mélenchon supports him now, that would make it even surer.

Stopped reading there. The only thing worse in politics than being a loser is being boring.

He never fooled me either, but he still managed to convince a large number of people - fooling that many people is a prowess in itself......

This argument old or not is valid. The medias forced on us a truth (Macron on the second round) that was wasn't a truth at first but did became true because we all believed it.

I am genuinely shocked that Fillon endorsed Macron. What a c**k. It's like Ted Cruz endorsing Hillary.
