I don't think people realize how evil the education system is in the US. Kids have been told for decades that going to college is a pathway to success. WhichΒ it can be. Education brings career opportunities and therefore a higher income than those with less education.Β

However, they have made these students SLAVES to student loans. Many people my age will have to wait to even buy a house or have kids because of the crippling debt.Β

It's pure evil.Β

THIS. Β I'm still at home paying upwards of 500 a month on loans and my current job pays well but not enough. In that way I'm lucky but some owe thousands a month. Then I have to pay my other bills, I have no money to move out and get my life started. I followed everything I was taught in college to secure a job and none of it worked.Β I have people telling me at my current job I need to move up and out but that's impossible bc people aren't retiring to free jobs up and there's so many kids fighting for one job. Sometimes they don't even look at your resume and no matter how much you sell yourself, doesn't matter. Networking helps but doesn't guarantee anything, sorry to be pessimistic but everything we are taught is a lie.Β

I did everything I had to to get a degree and these people want to make it harder to unlock these chains of the weight of these loans. Nobody under 30 should be thousands in debt bc we are told we need a degree to succeed.Β

If education "buys" more future opportunities and jobs perhaps, but general higher education for all is all the more importantΒ for the society at large, and I think that is more important in the long term.

A privilege for who? Those whose parents are rich enough to pay for their schooling?

Education is the key to upward mobility. How is a person going to succeed in the world if they don't have an education? If they only have access to menial, low paying, minimum wage jobs because they have never had the opportunity to be educated? What does that mean for their future families? They won't be able to send their kids through college either.Β

Education also no doubt helps the community. Doctors, lawyers, teachers all need a college education. College educated people provide invaluable services to the community. If you are capable and willing to work hard, you should have the opportunity.

Those kids should find a part-time job then and do not expect free handouts. Thanks God America is not a socialist country (yet).

Education is your privilege because it gives an opportunity to succeed and you have to pay for that opportunity. There is basically no such thing as free education. The only thing that matters is who is paying for your education.Β In "free" higher education, people who aren't going to college are subsidizing those who are.Β

Also, when you separate the connection between the buyer and the seller, you introduce all sorts of corruption and inefficiencies into the system (I grew up in a country with free higher education, so I know how it works).

Moreover,Β there's some central authority deciding what gets taxpayer money and what doesn't, so it creates even more room for dictatorship in colleges which are extremely left-leaning nowadays. As far as I know, among top-notch universities in America only MIT is a moderate in terms of politics. There is no diversity of thought. Β

"Those kids should find a part-time job then and do not expect free handouts."
That's what they do? As many American members have noted in this very thread though - the debt can still be overbearing and extremely difficult to deal with. Programs like the one Trump has scrapped just made it easier for Students to repay their loans.

"Education is your privilege because it gives an opportunity to succeed and you have to pay for that opportunity."

Yes, but not every person can afford to pay $500 a month to pay off their student loan debts. Students also have to start paying that off within 6 months after finishing school... With what? The money they get forΒ Internships?Β Service jobs?Β Entry Level positions? leaving enough room for rent and food? The result isΒ an economy with an entire class of people unable to participate in it. If people have no money, people can’t buy stuff.Β

"There is basically no such thing as free education. The only thing that matters is who is paying for your education.Β In "free" higher education, people who aren't going to college are subsidizing those who are. "

This story isn't about free education... But I would say that in a society that provides free education, when those who receive their education get jobs their taxes would also contribute.Β Nations that offer free education also have a population of peopleΒ not saddled with debt and therefore are capable of contributing to the economy.

"Also, when you separate the connection between the buyer and the seller, you introduce all sorts of corruption and inefficiencies into the system"

Look, I don't live in a country with free education, but I do live in a country that provides government loans without ridiculous interest rates and financially crippling repayment plans. For that I'm pretty grateful. Trump's secretary of education scrapped a program that made it easier for students to manageΒ their student loan debt, that's kinda shitty.

Those "kids" have part time jobs. Inflation for tuition had grown at astronomical rates over the last twenty years. It's a racquet and they are taking advantage of the situation. The college tuition/loan bubble is going to become the new housing bubble and will end up putting us into a recession...and perhaps a depression eventually. This is far more serious and complicated than "kids should pull themselves up by their bootstraps".Β

In the US, taxpayers pay for services that they don't use themselves. As a taxpayer, you may not ever have kids...but you pay for education forΒ preK through 12th grade for everyone else's kids. The same principle could be used for higher education.Β

State schools already get federal and state funding, which are subsidized by tax payers. Colleges are left leaning because educated people are, by and large, left leaning. The younger generation is left leaning.Β

What colleges do you consider "top notch"? By the way, MIT is a Private college that costs 60,000 a year.Β

Have you ever been on a college campus in the US? They are left leaning and most people are liberals.Β

What you've linked is inconsistent with that I've personally experienced.

And yes he won among WHITE educated voters because they are WHITE. Race has a lot to do with the perception people have of the world. Β And he only won by 4 points among this group.Β

If you look at ALL people, the ones with a higher education voted mostly Democrat by 9 points.Β

Ivy League schools are Private Institutions.Β They are not included in the plan for community colleges and state schools to offer free tuition. Is this confusing to you?Β

I don't live in a bubble, I live in the US, where the population isn't all white. In the 2016 election, a wide gap in presidential preferences emerged between those with and without a college degree. College graduates backed Clinton by a 9-point margin (52%-43%), while those without a college degree backed Trump 52%-44%. This is by far the widest gap in support among college graduates and non-college graduates in exit polls dating back to 1980.Β

What white bubble do you live in?Β

You didn't address anything else in my comment. Maybe it is because you don't understand the US education system as a whole?Β
