Alaska depends mostly on oil exports to generate wealth and the vast majority flows through a very large and expensive pipeline carrying oil from North down to port areas. The oil production however has been in decline for years and low prices and cheaper Shale competition is not helping. The problem is the pipeline wasnt designed for such low flow rates. About 500,000 barrels a day are going through but the pipeline was designed for over 800,000 As a result ice cristals are forming and each winter is getting worse. It is feared outright blockages could occur as flow rates keep dropping and potentially cause large ruptures If the pipeline becomes inoperable Alaska will loose its only large infrastructure to carry the oil it still produces Alaska has tried setting up heating stations to try to keep oil from freezing in pipeline and adding anti-freeze additives. Well they have been setting up heating stations throughout pipeline. Its exepensive but they have no choice Also there are a couple of recent big oil finds in Alaska that may help to at least temporarily keep oil production stable without it falling further But these days companies are focused on Shale Oil. Its cheaper to produce, the reserves are large, and they know where the shale is so they dont have to spend money exploring for it It means most oil production investment in the US will be in the Texas Shale formation the "Permian" which is the most productive shale formation in the US therefore oil can be produced as cheap as $40/barrel Even the other shale formations like the Bakken in North Dakota and Canada, or the Marcellus etc are still cheaper and more productive than oil in Alaska Therefore things dont look good for them long-term Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
