The fact of the matter is, China shouldn't need encouragement to take care of this mess. They need the US more than they need Russia or North Korea, but their pride is allowing this to happen. I would venture a guess that the US would prefer China to literally take over the region rather than have needs to go to war with them and cause tensions to mount.

I know that some people aren't happy with the US for wanting to defend the area, but North Korea is directly threatening the US by threatening Japan and South Korea. North Korea likely would have little chance of actually taking their missiles to the US, but Japan and South Korea do not deserve to be left to the slaughter if North Korea decides to attack. 

In any case, I think this time, after all the hot air, there will be a more definitive answer to North Korea, the only question is what that answer will be and from who it will come.

It's not that North Koreans want to destabilize SK, but if North Korea collapsed and became a united Korea that's an entire half of the country that needs it's infrastructure completely built and it's around 25 million uneducated, impoverished people that need education, jobs, access to water and so on.

It's got nothing to do with NK's citizens wanting to destroy the South and more to do with the fact that South Korea has a population of 50 million people currently. If 25 million impoverished, uneducated North Koreans suddenly join then that's a 50% increase in the population and these people need a lot. The entire economy would not be able to handle that sort of influx of impoverished people and wouldn't be able to rebuild all of the Infrastructure of North Korea and provide the people with education, health care and the rest. They would need the economic support of China and/or the U.S.

It would be like one day, 1/3 of this new country's population was unemployed, uneducated and impoverished with little to no identification and 1/2 the country had crumbling infrastructure that needed to be urgently repaired. It would be a bureaucratic and economic nightmare situation for Korea. South Korea couldn't deal with it by itself.


I don't think anybody's ignoring North Korea, it's just... What do you do? You go to war with North Korea with the risk that they nuke South Korea and/or Japan and you drag China and Japan into a conflict, destabilising the region even more and create even more death and suffering? That's not the greatest option.

The traditional path has been economic sanctions. It's a slower method, but theoretically with enough pressure it could work - it's just that unfortunately now it does seem to hurt the people more than the leader. If China could be convinced to put more economic pressure on North Korea then eventually I think North Korea would be forced to fall in line. There doesn't seem to be any quick and painless fix though.


I don't claim to have any answers, I don't think even the brightest experts claim that - it's just a lot to consider and a United Korea, at this point, is not even something South Korea want. It would be nice, but it would require a lot of economic support from the U.S and China.
