Is this appropriation of white culture? 90% of the time Beyonce has "white"hair style, and we call it cool and sexy..So why such terms and problems are valid only if a white person do it, but not vice versa? The whole problem comes from the fact that ,unfortunately for many people discrimination is something that only black, latino etc. people could experience, but not the bad white people. Fun fact, slave comes from the french esclave which comes from the slavic people. You know why, because the WHITE slavic people were the first slaves and the statistics clearly shows that through the ages, the white race was the most enslaved. But still, today when we talk about discrimination it's not about the person, but the race. Which is wrong. Everyone could be discriminated no matter the race and everyone should have the right to look, wear and do whatever he/she likes unless it is against the law. So if I want to have an afro hair style or you want to have blue eyes lenses, we should and we could do it, without arguing whether this is an appropriation of this or that... ok so black women had to change hairstyles and conform to white styles over time just to avoid racist remarks from white people in public. it is deep seeded and even black people get on to other black people for not having white hairstyles. its completely different bc black people were trying to be as safe as they could with their appearances in a white world in america. it didn't start out as a choice and wasn't a choice until black people started rebelling from that act in the 60s & they still face backlash from whites and blacks for going natural again & now have white peole degrading the meaning and history of black hairstyles. ITS NOT JUST ABOUT HAIR FOR THEM. there is history and suffering and oppression woven into every loc, every weave, every protective style. look up kathleen cleaver's quotes. There is a tribe in africa that produces an offspring with blonde hair. Those characteristics aren't owned by white people. not just in africa, but there is a group of islanders in the south pacific that are black and also have the blonde gene & its only from them. i found the pics in the archives at my work in a wwII museum. it was amazing bc i thought that only happened to black people in a different part of the world. But do African-Americans understand that either? (specifically young African-Americans) As someone part-black, and whose country fairly recently-historically speaking--experienced colonization, not only do I admit I'll never understand the dark history of slavery, but neither do my grandparents or anyone I've met from older generations. So I don't understand this point you're making. As for the fun fact, braids, baby hairs, afro and afro-like hair aren't "owned" by black people either Can we all stick together and get rid of this "owning things that are biological" trend going on? TL;DR I don't see how any of the points you're making directly relate to this French Montanna situation. Also, not an attack on you personally, just finding this whole thing ludicrous. I wasn't speaking about the French Montana situation. I was addressing his statement saying cultural appropriation is "stupid". I never said any races owns any hairstyle. Its something made popular and used heavily by a certain race. I can't go to paris and act like I invented certain things they do as if it was new. The whole point is to appreciate different cultures in the right way. Don't use black culture as a trend or as a way to look "non-white." Slavery is a whole other subject that there is no point to get into lol. Its like we are told to remember the holocaust and remember the 13 colonies era , but we are basically told to just forget about black slavery, Indian treatment, and Irish slavery. For what reason, I don't know. It doesn't help when everything in black culture is viewed as "urban" and "ghetto" lol Don't worry I don't take things personally, thats what forums are for.
