freebit 6,240
The animated comedy bottled up a leading $49 million from 3,773 locations, edging out Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” a box office juggernaut that’s dominated the multiplexes since debuting three weeks ago. “Beauty and the Beast” added another $48 million to its mammoth $395.5 million domestic haul. The weekend’s other new release, Paramount’s “Ghost in the Shell,” bombed, taking in a demoralizing $19 million. Ghost In The Shell saw a return of $19m on a $110m budget in US launch weekend. Did you guys see any new movies this weekend?
Seeka 12,372
Ghost in Shell will probably earn a balance, but make little profit. It had far too much going against it. It's a live-action adaptation of an anime. It's not going to do well.

River 116,591
I feel bad for Scarlett, she's very talented but got into a trouble for this movie.. I don't like movies with babies, I don't find them funny.. and tbh it's so easy to melt down the hearts of people with a cute bossy baby.. it's like "oh my god my son is the same hahahaha" So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

I wonder if any of the media outcry (both social & editorial) had any damper on the movie's buzz, or if it just didn't look that great to people. I think it going up against two family films probably didn't help it, but still bombed kind of hard regardless.

Sorcerer 12,505
Beauty and the Beast has the best reviews among these films anyway. Boss Baby looks very tragic. I never liked its concept.
Kermit 15,807
Been waiting to go see Boss Baby. Not trying to be the only 17 year old in there, though... “For me, insanity is super sanity. weed 73,806
I saw Ghost in the Shell yesterday and it was good. Graphics were phenom, acting was good, story/dialogue was average. Not surprised it flopped, hope it breaks even. The Boss Baby I'm surprised did so well, I've heard literally no one talk about it (makes sense for people around me irl, but didn't even see anything online). I'm slowly caring less and less for animated movies, but maybe I'll check it out
Emvee 8,392
Hollywood should stay away from Anime. When has an adaptation actually worked? Anime storylines are super fantastical and only appeal to small niche of Americans.

It's a mix of things really, I think. 1. All live-action adaptations of anime/manga suck, end of. 2. Those who may have been interested may have been turned off because all the previews look exactly like the very first Ghost in the Shell movie, which had long twenty minute shots of animation with nothing happening. 3. It had horrible SJW made controversy of whether or not Scarlett was the correct choice for playing the Major, and the major fight of whether or not she was Japanese or not. There are a few other others I could name off the top of my head but it'd take too much time. But it kind of revolves around culture dissonance and the fact it's hard for Americans to an adaptation of an anime that takes in Japan since Anime usually puts a lot of focus on Japanese cultural values. While the story does revolves around cyborgs and at what point do you lose your humanity and the entire "Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep" that is an ideal very appealing to the Japanese people and their culture which focuses on the whole acting as one. Anime storylines are super fantastical and only appeal to small niche of Americans. The major problem Hollywood faces is that 'niche' of Americans are constantly let down by the Hollywood adaptations. I don't know one person who is into Anime that wants to see Ghost In The Shell because they knew from the get go that it was going to be totally ****. I think there is an audience there tbh, I don't really think it matters what the source material is as long as it's a well done sci-fi/action/drama/whatever with good promo. The niche Anime fans are loyal enough that they will no doubt flock to see the movie, if it's done the source material justice. That might not be enough to cover it's budget, but it's enough of a kick early and it's enough to garner enough positive reception and good reviews to encourage others to try it out. Ghost In The Shell started getting bad reviews as soon as Scarlett Johansson was cast. The first things I heard about this movie was about how Hollywood had ****ed up in it's casting and that it was bound to be a disaster. It was article upon article talking about how terrible it was going to be. Upon it's release reviews like: "Enjoy the credits because they offer some of the more arresting, inventive images in this visually cluttered yet often disappointingly drab movie" From The NY Times "Ghost in the Shell struggles to dig below the surface of its thought-provoking concepts and bring real depth to its striking visuals" From Screen Rant "The filmmakers think little of the emotional and intellectual connection fans already have with this property, and have put all their chips on the aesthetic." From Vulture and 2 stars on Rotten Tomato didn't help. The consensus is that the source material is intellectually and emotionally rich while this adaption is shallow, cluttered, clichéd and relies on striking visuals. That's not what fans on Anime want and it's not what the GP wants. The problem with Ghost In The Shell is that it's a bad movie, I think it has little to do with the original source being Anime.
