StrawberryBlond 14,191
We simply differ in perspective. It's okay. I can totally understand why you wouldn't want to walk around topless. I myself am less endowed and live in a very hot climate and I wouldn't mind being able to "cool off" with minimal judgment. I have also studied art my whole life and having posed for figure drawing courses, I guess I have grown quite comfortable with the idea of being in various states of undress in front of others. But that's what is great about feminism- it is all about having choices. I would just ultimately like for men and women to be treated equally in all areas of life. If I want to make the choice to wear something I should not be treated any differently than my male counterpart would be for making a similar choice. That's all. Idealistic? Yes very. But as a young person I know that we can make the moves to get the ball rolling and put these things into place. I mean, 100 years ago it was considered indecent for women to show their legs in public... :eyeroll: I know that we are not going to see eye to eye on her intentions behind this outfit and that's fine. I just figured that it's a fashion event and I found the fashion choice to be aesthetically pleasing. I really didn't gather that she was presenting herself in a s-xual manner. As I said I can't comment on her intentions though, in this or any other aspect of her life. And, even if I were to concede on that point (perhaps if she were to come right out and say that she just did it to get people talking, etc.), I still believe that art is anything that gets one to stop and think. As this outfit has caused quite a bit of that between just the two of us alone, I'd say that it wasn't all that horrible an occurrence for her to have worn it in the first place. Having discussions like this are why I like being in a community of fans as diverse as Gaga's. Good chat. Â If you want to cool off in hot weather, there's legal ways around it, though. If you're in a private area, say, your garden, it's allowed, or a topless beach. Then there's those outdoor showers around pools where you can pour some water in your bra. In female sections of gyms, there's communal showers. To be honest, I don't get why it's the norm in North America to have communal showers in high schools that you have to use - for all the women I know, its always been a case of changing in the most discreet way possible. So, there's many options that don't involve being topless in public for everyone to see. Personally, I can only see downsides to public toplessness. There's the whole "feeling more uncomfortable without a bra than with one" concept (the bigger you are, the more comfortable a bra is to wear as it confines the heaviness of your breasts and gives them a lift that they can't naturally create and reduces the film of sweat that gathers underneath. I've even worn bras when I've gone to bed so I'm not flopping around whenever I turn). Not wearing a bra all the time will cause sagging much earlier, especially for big breasts. Sunburn is a huge issue and will become even bigger and more serious if women start going topless without protecting the skin. If we get turned on, everyone will know as our nipples will harden. We might bump into a male family member/colleague/friend and be mortified. Our romantic partners probably won't like other people ogling at us. We could get pictures taken of us with camera phones or tablets without our permission and end up with our topless image on a stranger's personal device. Some men think it's perfectly acceptable to grope a provocatively dressed woman and will definitely do so to a topless woman (or worse). The cattiness of judging other women's looks will occur and women who don't measure up could get laughed at in the street. Breasts will be looked at as more s-xual rather than less s-xual because the act of toplessness is likened to putting on a show. Point is, just because some people may view breasts as nothing s-xual, good luck trying to convince everyone else to do the same. Men would treat it all like one never-ending holiday and a free show. You only need to look at any comments following stories about topless marches to see things along the lines of "Why is it always the unattractive girls that go topless?" with lots of thumbs up. I think that tells you all you need to know about what the situation would be like if it became legal. Â The way I see it is, Rihanna has always presented herself s-xually (and has become more vulgar with it as time has gone on). She had nothing but a rose covering her pubic region in her Loud album booklet. She's posed in many a picture with her legs spread wide. She's done photoshoots for publications recently where she's naked from her waist down in a "presenting" position and appeared full on topless. She frequents strip clubs and gets lapdances. She appeared in a video as a stripper and spread her legs and twerked. And most of her songs are about s-x, explicitly so, in lots of cases. Now this completely transparent dress. So, I think it's safe to say that she did intend for this look to be s-xual. In my opinion, for something to be art it has to have genuine vision and talent behind it - it can't be something that anyone could do. Rihanna's just wearing a dress that someone else made. It could have been an artistic statement from the creator, if anything, but not from her. Â But yeah, whatever we think, it's great to discuss things intelligently and nicely rather than rude, poorly phrased rebuttals.
