There's only a small number of tribes in Africa that still view topless women as nothing unusual. I don't think there's anywhere else in the world that does this. And I think the way these tribes operate is largely because a lot of them are too poor to buy clothes - most poverty-stricken people in third world countries tend to be very sparsely dressed, after all. So, viewing breasts as non s-xual was actually a learned behaviour because you would see a lot of that in your poor community. And I know some countries have nude beaches and so on, but that's a different thing - it's limiting nudity to a space where everyone is the same rather than fully clothed men and topless women side-by-side. So, I'm not saying that Western culture is the norm everywhere, but regarding the breasts issue, it's true in about 98% of the world. And I don't think the need for women to be topless in public is up there with important issues like women's right to vote and gay marriage. I don't see women rising up demanding to be topless in public. Why do they need to be? Speaking as someone with 38DD's, being topless in public would be so uncomfortable with non-supported breasts weighing me down and I'd have to add sunscreen there too (the sun beaming onto sensitive places like breasts can't be healthy for pale-skinned, sensitive types). Not to mention, I'd have sleazy men eyeing me up or trying to molest me. So, unsurprisingly, not a lot of women seem too keen on the idea. The idea of toplessness is something only a woman with basically no breasts could carry off, which is quite ironic, really. And needless to say, I'm already sick of fashions that could only compliment skinny women with no breasts, hips or bum. We don't need entire ways of life that only work for skinny women. The modelling industry is bad enough as it is.

In Rihanna's case, I look at her as someone who is heavily narcissistic one day, and has rock bottom self esteem the next. She boasts a lot and likes to drag, but then does something that suggests she just wants approval at the end of the day. It's safe to say that anyone who stays with someone who hits them doesn't have the confidence to leave. People who are genuinely confident with their appearance don't take constant selfies and go out practically naked. Doing those things suggests fake confidence. That's why it's hard to tell who's genuinely confident and who isn't. But I say that when you add it all up, it begins to make sense.

Thing is, she didn't dress like this to show off something that we were all born with. She did it to titillate and nothing more. And as anyone can do that, I don't view it as an artistic statement. Not all forms of nudity are offensive, for example, being a nude model in a life drawing class or being examined medically or teaching about human bodily functions and reproduction. But when nudity is presented as pure s-xual titilliation, it's put into the category of erotica or p0rnography, depending on the extent of it.

We simply differ in perspective. It's okay.

I can totally understand why you wouldn't want to walk around topless. I myself am less endowed and live in a very hot climate and I wouldn't mind being able to "cool off" with minimal judgment. I have also studied art my whole life and having posed for figure drawing courses, I guess I have grown quite comfortable with the idea of being in various states of undress in front of others. But that's what is great about feminism- it is all about having choices. I would just ultimately like for men and women to be treated equally in all areas of life. If I want to make the choice to wear something I should not be treated any differently than my male counterpart would be for making a similar choice. That's all. Idealistic? Yes very. But as a young person I know that we can make the moves to get the ball rolling and put these things into place. I mean, 100 years ago it was considered indecent for women to show their legs in public... :eyeroll:

I know that we are not going to see eye to eye on her intentions behind this outfit and that's fine. I just figured that it's a fashion event and I found the fashion choice to be aesthetically pleasing. I really didn't gather that she was presenting herself in a s-xual manner. As I said I can't comment on her intentions though, in this or any other aspect of her life. And, even if I were to concede on that point (perhaps if she were to come right out and say that she just did it to get people talking, etc.), I still believe that art is anything that gets one to stop and think. As this outfit has caused quite a bit of that between just the two of us alone, I'd say that it wasn't all that horrible an occurrence for her to have worn it in the first place.

Having discussions like this are why I like being in a community of fans as diverse as Gaga's. Good chat.
