By that rule, TFM should have won, because 2010 was gaga's year, and she had the sales and quality. Born This Way is, imo, superior as a whole body of work, and it had more impact on the society (not charts) than TFM. But 21 was the other contender, which was (and still is, in my mediocre opinion) one of the most impactful albums in music's history, and it deserved to win against my so much loved Born This Way. It truly lost against the best. TF is a good debut album, yes, but not her best work. Gaga yet had to prove herself. So, i will go with The Fame Monster, despite BTW is a much better album; but TFM had all the AOTY conditions, which Arcade Fire didn't (and 21 had). This album is her Magnum Opus so far, and it's just really complex and interesting by its components. It explores many genres and puts them all together within the pop sphere. Both masterpieces were the start of something new in our Western Culture in many ways. If it wasn't for Adele's 21, BTW would have won, but I'll take it since she's very talented and that album was a smash and also started a new trend: the anti-popstar movement. Many artists left behind all those outrageous things they did inspired by Gaga (music videos, performances, outfits, extravaganza, the communication with public and fans) and their music became suddenly very intimate and simple. In a perfect world it would've won over the snoozefest that was 21 Gaga's loss to Arcade Fire the previous year didn't sting as much because The Suburbs is an incredible album.
