Maddow exposing Trump's taxes tonight

The reaction on social media by conservatives to Maddow's report is very strange. They are celebrating the death of what they consider to be the Liberal theory that Trump doesn't pay federal income tax. But they either forget, or don't care, that it was Donald Trump himself who said that the fact that he didn't pay a federal income tax made him "smart."

CLINTON: Or maybe he doesn't want the American people, all of you watching tonight, to know that he's paid nothing in federal taxes, because the only years that anybody's ever seen were a couple of years when he had to turn them over to state authorities when he was trying to get a casino license, and they showed he didn't pay any federal income tax.

TRUMP: That makes me smart.

:saladga: The mind boggles.

That's exactly right. The public doesn't care about the details. All they want is "is he guilty or is he not guilty?" The more they drag out these stories, the more the public will get bored of the anti trump agenda.

It really just leads me to believe that the media is using this story as a sensation that will give them ratings. This is the equivalent to the election cycle horse race. All the while, people are literally shitting on their representatives over the repeal of Obamacare. Where's the 24/7 coverage on that? There is REAL outrage in America right now, yet themedia is not giving these people a voice or a platform. Their "town halls" are scripted pieces of garbage.

But the town halls are real and the media did talk about it. A lot actually.

This leak of Trump's tax return was a dud at best. But like other people on here pointed out, this could lead to something much bigger. However, shouldn't the people understand what else is going on about Trump? Aren't these ratings a good thing if it's educating people on the things that they may not know about? Is there a sensationalization over Trump? Yes. But let's not sensationalize that other coverage isn't being reported on either. It's not the media's fault that the Trump admin is a shitshow literally everyday. I do see why we shouldn't report on everything, but this is typical of the media. If the people of this country want to do something, then they should go make their voices heard. And they do. It's about getting involved and understanding what is actually happening. Don't forget that it's the politicians and the elite that cover this stuff up everyday and protect their jobs, not the media. I repeat, the fault of all of this is NOT the media.

Kind of random, but important info about the term "liberal" like as you mentioned. Some people need to know.

From a post I found:

"I don't understand, aren't liberals democrats and progressives...? I'm a little confused. Pls shed some light"

I thought Bernie was a liberal

Protip: don’t say the whole “left” thing. Bernie is a progressive and wonderful person. Applying simply “left” to him is not a good discription. It kind of ****s both parties here.

Is a liberal now like a neo-liberal? Sorry, I’m confused by all the terms now…

We have had a few of these recently, so I figured I would address them all at once.

There is a problem with using the term Liberal in politics, especially in the United States. Two facets of any ideology are Social and Economic policy. In the United States, we have had an odd arrangement with our political parties. Prior to Clinton, the Democratic party had Liberal Social and a more Conservative Economic Policy. The Republican’s, since Reagan, have had Conservative social and Neo-Liberal Economic Policy. Since Clinton, the Democrats have been pushing Liberal Social and Neo-Liberal Economic Policy.

See how confusing that is? When you say “Liberal” context is important. Are we talking economic issues, social issues or the amount of cheese on nachos?

It can become very confusing.

That being said, here are some basic definitions to help you out:

Neoliberalism is a policy model of social studies and economics that transfers control of economic factors to the private sector from the public sector. …Neoliberal policies aim for a laissez-faire approach to economic development.

Liberalism (political) is a political philosophy or worldview founded on ideas of liberty and equality

Liberals (international relations) believe that international institutions play a key role in cooperation among states. With the correct international institutions, and increasing interdependence (including economic and cultural exchanges) states have the opportunity to reduce conflict.

Progressive are those who focus on using government power to make large institutions play by a set of rules

Leftist is a general descriptive terms for any of several otherwise quite varied political ideologies (socialism, communism, social democracy, welfare statism, contemporary American liberalism, some versions of anarchism, etc.) that join in denouncing the extent of economic and social inequality in the present order of society and advocate the adoption of vigorous public policies to reduce or eliminate these inequalities.

Hence why Bernie is a Leftist, a Progressive and a Liberal.

Again, I think a lot of people should look at themselves in the mirror and read this to themselves.

I was quoting tweets and speculations by partisan Trump supporters who were talking about the "Liberal theory"  that Trump did not pay federal income tax. And I don't particularly agree with the post you shared. But whatevs. :)

Not convinced that this will lead to anything substantial. This hunt for Trump's tax returns is not a new thing and whoever is leaking this would have leaked actual incriminating information by now. With this "leak," Trump will ensure that his information is kept at high security. The chance at a sneak attack has been lost.

Of course politicians and the elite are to blame, but your defense and rosy depiction of the media is naive. They may not be totally to blame, but they are not totally blameless. You talk as if the elite and the media had absolutely no ties.

I know. I was just putting the info out there because people tend to use whatever words they think are smart.

Well what does the media have to do with what Trump does behind closed doors? If people are more upset with the media rather than Trump, his admin, and every other thing that goes wrong in the world, then that's your problem right there. The media is obviously influenced in one way or the other, but that doesn't dispute, for the most part, that the media doesn't report actual news. At the end of the day, it's their job to get ratings and to report of the things that may or may not be suited for over 300 million people.

Once again people will always prove their ignorance of reality. We don't need CNN or Fox News to tell us what is happening. We have the power to get the facts, if available, by ourselves. And the main reason why we lag as a society in this world is because people choose to go the easy route: watching mainstream news, not getting what they want to hear and complaining that their voice isn't heard or that this news outlet is against the Pres. Again, it's 2017, the mainstream news isn't where anyone should be getting all of their knowledge.

Or are they just using a word which has an accepted colloquial meaning?
