"Germany plans a new law calling for social networks like Facebook to remove slanderous or threatening online postings quickly or face fines of up to 50 million euros ($53 mln).

...

The issue has taken on more urgency amid concern about the spread of fake news and racist content on social media, which often targets more than 1 million migrants who arrived in Germany in the last two years, as well as members of the Jewish community."

Good. :oprah: Spread of fake news hurt Hillary a lot in the US (for example).. or the fake news over the refugees in Germany)

Other countries should take notes :oprah: .. What do you think?

How can Facebook seriously track every article posted? :emma: Should be targeting the actual publication.

I agree that hate speech and fake news needs to be controlled. I see how this could backfire though with perhaps smaller social media sites blocking Germany so they don't have to comply with the law and pay fines.

That's a nice idea, but imagine right wing parties implementing such laws - ouch. It could be a Promising way to control hate speech but also a potential tool for propaganda/censorship.

Pretty sure there is a big difference between fake news and freedom of speech.

When you are barred from voicing your opinion, whether false or true, or irresponsible or the opposite, that is not good.

The thing is, the government is never clear on what constitutes as hate speech or fake news. In Canada, they're trying to pass a motion that imprisons people who criticize the Islamic religion as hate speech, which is ridiculous. Anything can be labelled fake news if an event is inconvenient or gives a bad reputation to a candidate. I don't like any laws that regulates people's freedom to say what they want unless it really promotes violent actions. People take free speech so much for granted, try expressing your views and thoughts on gay rights while living in Russia or Saudi Arabia... The West is slowly becoming totalitarian and authoritarian.

They have huge problems with Hoaxes, but I don't know if they'll implement such a plan.
