StrawberryBlond 14,883
That was actually really good. The song didn't hit me until the second listen. I can actually relate to it amazingly. Her voice didn't grate on me like it usually does either. When I heard Green Light, it sounded like she was really going to change her sound but this at least shows that she hasn't completely sold out. This is more like the kind of song I thought she was going to release and I think it shows a good bit of growth. But she needs to stop with the pretentiousness of the costume. It reminds me of the days when Gaga used to dress weird for no reason. She doesn't normally wear unusual outfits so I don't understand this choice. Why is going with a more pop, uptempo route immediately paired with selling out? It's not the decision to change your style that makes you a sell out, it's the intention behind that decision. I don't find the costume to be that far out there either. Lorde has never fit the exact standards in terms of fashion; she's always had some gothic and flamboyant flair that made her stand out. The only thing I find odd about this particular outfit is the headpiece, which is more so just ugly than weird. Her reasoning behind it could be the same reason lots of people dress unusual, including Gaga; they want to! There doesn't always have to be an elaborate meaning or ulterior motive behind an outfit. I respect your opinion but I just find it a bit pessimistic. The Unbannable Chanteuse

Going down the route so many others have done to follow a new trend just screams of selling out. We don't know the intention behind her decision, so we can only speculate. No, the outfit isn't that far out there but it's certainly the weirdest thing I've ever seen her wear. She's usually a 'black polo neck and long skirt' kinda girl and keeps it very simple, so to see her attempt to tell a story with an unusual outfit was a bit surprising. Apparently she said afterwards that she was supposed to be dressed as a moth, hence the bright light in front of her and maybe a reference to 'fly into the sun.' But it still doesn't make much sense. I mean, I can't really argue it because as you said, it's speculation. Although, her personality and such suggest otherwise. After a few listens I personally don't find Green Light to be that much of a departure from her previous work, but it is enough to isolate some of her fans. I wasn't aware she was dressed as a moth, I had more of a bridal interpretation. I can see how it might work. Moths and butterflies belong to the same family but moths are considered an outlier; they're the ugly members and are associated with negativity, you could almost say they're a liability (). Yeah, her personality suggests otherwise. Although in the lead-up to all this, she's got a lot more accepting of sexuality in interviews and such in a way she never used to before. She outright used to say that popstars were being too sexual. But a year or so later, she was liking Kim K's break the internet shoot. I never though she would support Kim K. Of course she's growing up and views can change, but there was a time when she was really against the whole concept of a sexual image. We haven't seen any real evidence of her doing the same yet, but there's always a chance. Because she started out young, when her view of the world is still developing, any change in direction can look like a sell-out, which is why I prefer people to hold off on getting record deals until they've at least 18, though being a bit older is even better. Green Light's grown on me, it's actually one of my favourite songs from her now. But her fans from the beginning might be a bit put out by this more dancey take an otherwise typical Lorde song. The chorus sounds almost like a dance remix of a Lorde song, yet it's the original version. Not so good if you liked her stripped back style before. Yeah, some people thought she was supposed to be Miss Havisham, which would work. But the moth interpretation would certainly explain that big bright light that has no business being there. Don't know if everyone else got it, though.
