There's nothing strange about it. 5.2 million were deported during Obama's presidency, if I'm not mistaken. 

For the record many undocumented immigrants pay taxes. According to a study I read last year they contribute nearly $12 bilion a year. 

Futhermore, you must understand Latin America if you want to comprehend the waves of illegal immigration that has occurred in the US for decades from this part of the world.

I think having people walking around undocumented is very strange in a time where people need to be documented. Don't get me wrong, there's illegal immigrants here but it feels like far more is done about it, plus there's generally less need for them to be illegally here. If someone is fleeing a country for their own safety, they can claim asylum here and they instantly have access to free health care, various welfare and accommodation etc. They gain their right to work after a certain amount of time etc. etc.

Now, don't get me wrong. We're purposely making it harder for people to enter the country since they get a great standard of life here and instead of compromising on the quality of care we offer, we'd rather reduce the amount we give it to but it's an evil that needs to be done.

Basically, it's strange to me because the current system sounds ass backwards. You need a system that actually supports these people and encourages them to be documented.

Ok, I see what you mean. I thought you meant it was strange as in nothing is being done about it, etc. 

Well, yes. The system here is very broken. I personally believe sticter immigration combined with plans to legalize the 12 million already here is needed. 

The issue here is so political. Republicans tend to advocate stricter immigration rules but haven't offered an issue for the families already here. Democrats advocate for legalziation and programs to help these people but are perceived as being too soft on the rules. 

I think a mixture of both is needed. It is quite ironic that Obama deported the most people. 

And OF COURSE as you might have guessed the issue becomes racial/ethnic as everything here does when some laws have advocated racial profiling to catch illegals, etc.

Applying for citizenship is a long and complicated process in the United States. My uncle's been applying for a visa for 17 years now and he only got it approved last year.
