Wow, this review was BRUTAL. Even I didn't think it was this bad. People say I'm harsh but holy smokes, this puts me in the shade. I mean, it's all so true. But would a teeny bit of positivity have gone amiss? Supermarket Flowers deserved a mention as a little ray of light, surely? It almost feels like the reviewer is more concerned about criticising his personality than his music and I don't approve of that when critics do it to Gaga, I wouldn't advocate it towards anyone else either. Though at least it sounds like this reviewer actually understood the album which is at least something - so many critics play dumb these days when reviewing Gaga's work.

However, I like how this reviewer picks up on very real annoyances about the portrayal of women in his songs. "Angels or traitors" is right on the money. I don't think I've ever heard a song from him where the girl was something in between or complicated in any way. They're just like cardboard cut-outs of female stereotypes. New Man really bugs me in particular when he acts as if this girl doesn't know what she wants or what's best for her. The whole "don't let that guy tell you who you are, let me tell you who you are," is a very tired piece of subtle sexism and hypocrisy that pervades through countless songs (most of them hits) these days. And he can't even be bitter about a breakup like a normal person, he has to shoot down his humble image by saying that if it was working out with this new man, then "you wouldn't be calling me up trying to *gasp sound effect.*" Yeah, sure, Ed. Well, if you're ok with stereotyping women, how about I stereotype right back and say that phoning up an ex looking for a pity sh*g is more of a guy thing and most women wouldn't stoop to that level? And by the way, how do you know what's going on below the belt of her new man?

But at the end of the day, the critic scene is boring without reviews like this. Few critics are still this harsh. Most of them like everything, even if it's only a 50% positive review. Many of them don't have the balls to say anything that will truly rock the boat, though whether that's to halt a potential tidal wave of hate mail from fans or because they're getting paid to be nice, I don't know. But thank heavens for places like Pitchfork who just go in without fear of offending. If artists never get reviews like this, they never learn or get better.

I don't hate Ed and I haven't listened to this album, but after reading the lyrics of NEW MAN I think he deserves lower than that. What kind of stupid trash?

I heard he spent five hundred pounds on jeans
Goes to the gym at least six times a week
Wears boat shoes with no socks on his feet
And I heard he's on a new diet and watches what he eats
He's got his eyebrows plucked and his arsehole bleached

[...]

Your new man rents a house in the burb, and wears a man bag on his shoulder but I call it a purse.

That was just ****ing ridiculous.

The song describes an ideal guy for me (except the bleached arsehole, I would be concerned if he does that).

What's annoying is that these are "female" qualities that he's pointing out and bashing the man for. What's wrong with a bag, plucking eyebrows or watching what you eat? On top of that, if someone is renting a nice place in this economy, that's a plus for me!

What makes Ed think I (or other women) want to go out with a sexist pig who doesn't look out for himself and bashes others who are doing what they want to do?

If someone said that to me, they're deleted from my life. I expected more from Ed, but the fact that he's pushing these sexist and negative images in his songs can make guys more insecure about themselves. I can't find a decent man because everyone thinks putting on a fake "tough" image is attractive, and those that exist are not putting their true selves out.

EDIT: I know I'm overreacting but I'm just tired of seeing this kind of stuff. Plus I heard the song is aimed at Harry Styles for some reason :T

I fell down the stairs once as an actor.

It's quite the melodrama, this album. And yet, it's so incredibly bland at the same time.. It's truly baffling.
