Ed Sheeran Will Destroy the Chart Next Week

With the release of Ed Sheeran's new album, next week's Billboard Hot 100 looks like it will be destroyed by it.

Ed's songs from the album are streaming CRAZY good and are selling well.

Because of the increase in streaming on Billboard's point system, this means that Ed's songs have big potential to chart high on next week's Billboard Hot 100. Not only will this disrupt the positions of songs like "Millions Reasons" for a week. It will have graver consequences for songs that have spent more than 20 weeks on the Hot 100. Billboard has a rule that if a song has spent more than 20 weeks on the chart and can't reach the top 50, it will be knocked out for good (unless is can rise above the #25 slot again).

These are the songs that will be knocked out prematurely

Treat You Better - Shawn Mendes (39 weeks)
Heathens - twentyone pilots (37 weeks)
Side to Side - Ariana Grande (27 weeks)
Let Me Love You - DJ Snake & Justin Bieber (30 weeks)
All Time Low - Jon Bellion (21 weeks )
Caroline - Amine (26 weeks)

This will cause songs to not have the overall chart points they could've had, making them a lesser hit than it could've been. For instance, these songs won't be as high up on the year end countdown for 2017, as they could've been. "Side to Side" had at least 2 or 3 more weeks on the chart.

This situation occurred back in early December when The Weeknd debuted his album and had 11 songs charting in the Top 50. And Ed Sheeran is streaming even more than The Weeknd and now streaming is worth more than December.

My feelings about streaming/charts is that it's becoming more about the popularity and trending of artists. Measuring success is so difficult now.

I miss the old days when charts were just based on sales. Now the system is so complicated that you probably have to have a damn PhD in math to work for Billboard.  :madge:

One positive thing i will say is that the weeknd only had 4 songs in the top 30 and three of them are now singles.

Million Reasons is bound to be in the 20's somewhere next week without Ed, and ed already has a 1 song in the top 30 now. Therefore, Million Reasons may not be disrupted by Ed

I couldn't care less about this stuck-up ginger guy. We haven't had such an overrated artist like him for many many years....
