I feel like Katy has always gotten away with bad vocals and mediocrity, so it always feels surprising when I see an actual blatantly negative critique about her like this. I remember rolling my eyes at her performances of Roar while dressed as a sexy cat and no one really saying how ridiculous it was.

Which is really damn sad because I genuinely think that if PI got the promo that CTTR got, it would've been a hit. If PI had a VMA debut, plus 2 or 3 more promo performances, it could've been a hit.

Surprised by the reaction  I saw the performance and didn't like it - it just didn't seem that far off her previous performances?

I saw it, with all it's faults, and it didn't really cross my mind that it was a spectacularly bad performance from her. I'm not saying the performance was good, just that - it seemed to me like a typical Katy performance so I'm not understanding the surprise. Maybe I need to watch it again.

I've always thought Katy's strength was how manufactured she was - I don't mean that in a shady way at all, I think she is a lot of the time self manufactured and I give her great credit for that.  I just mean she works with a dream team of writers/producers, she is very beautiful and she creates these cartoonish pop videos. Her appeal was the sugary sweet songs, the glossy colourful music videos and fun persona. Katy always shined when everything was constructed, I didn't think her strength was ever as a live performer hearing the cracks in her voice and seeing the sweat on her brow.

I actually like the woman and at least I was able to enjoy the three Chained to the Rhythm performances she delivered but yeah I do appreciate the fact that Gaga has evolved over time which makes her so interesting to watch each era.
