Cheap DJs. They're the problem.

I think this reply is a bit of a leap of logic (faith). It really doesn't seem like the correlation is completely there. It seemed that Electronic music was mainstream and got on pop landscape, then 90´s were ressurrected for a short time and deep house evaded the formula of climax drop  while pop music was a bit lost. Meanwhile indie records has captured the chill vibe that modern western world seeks for.  Mainstream music then has evolved into using this elements to its uses. But since Biebs is the main artist to make the establish the genre, we should  dissecate the background of those producers, to they're influences, how they got there

also that ter, tropical pop is something else. I might be a bit lost but i think you're confusing things

You are confusing things :air:

Lounge, chillout, deep house, trip hop, acid jazz are always interrelated, not distinctly separate genres; and deep house can be used as umbrella term for all, just like pop is often used for any mainstream genre that does not distinctively belong to one genre.

Today's mainstream pop uses deep house elements, and deep house was always the choice of european tastemakers' more than americans. Rap\Urban elements dominate even electronic music in US.

PS: I am not saying deep house is mainstream in Europe but it is mainstream among cool people, people that I took a pill in Ibiza song is about etc etc. I won't delve deep into subject to explain it :spin:

These.

Nostalgia is powerful. We only properly remember the classics and music we love and we'll look back on this decade and pull out the stuff we love as well. Every single year people say "it's such a bad year for mainstream music". People said it all the time about 2011 and now I see many people on here looking back on that as some kind of golden-age of pop music. It's the same and it will always be the same.

Exactly! Like I remember the 00's when they happened and everyone said "what is wrong with music?!?"

Now they wish it was like that on the music scene. Love what you love and ignore things you don't.

Currently listening to Joanne

It's a hard one to think about because whilst a lot of the previous few years (going back as far as 2000 or whatever) music might sound dated now, a lot of it was brilliant at the time, but it wasn't all the same, yes there were trends but it didn't feel like every song that did follow a trend went the same way, where as now, a lot of these songs do sound too similar.

Whats annoying now is that you look at a chart (in the uk anyway) and usually at least half is just dance music, be it the current choppy vocal EDM or recycled 90s house or tropical house and people really do eat it up. And what's even more annoying is that a lot the people releasing these kind of songs are people that no ones heard of, which is good because it means new artists out there, but then they're never heard of again because they got washed away with that trend, unless they manage to make a new song that hops on the next one :excuseu:

Like I sound like I'm just whinging but unless you're a massive or moderate star already, it's unoften you hear of someone new breaking into the mainstream or charts these days without them being a DJ or making Dance music.

Years and Years have got a lot of recognition, but would they have got where they are if they hadn't released King as their breakthrough single? Probably not.

Zara Larson is becoming quite famous but would she have done it without flipping lightly between her tropical and 90s house vibes?

I see where you guys are coming from, i guess for me it feels kinda f*cked up when you have all these random up and coming artists popping up, and not necessarily dominating the charts, but what they're putting out, isnt new or fresh or exciting, and then you have xyz ft. zxy & abc and suddenly its in the top 10

& then they will disappear ofc cause only legends have longetivity

but it does feel so basic @tizian, so so basic that it gets so hard to digest.

Even to the point where I did like ed sheeran, but hes getting to the point where its like ive heard this shyt before on multiply...

At least with Lady Gaga, her 5 albums are vastly different every single one can take you on its own journey.

Like i will listen to something from Joanne, and then ill listen to something from The Fame and I am completely mind fcuked at how this is the same artist!

Idk i like the music coming out today. I don't mind if it's not innovative or new as long as it's pleasant to my ears tbh.

Half the people on this thread are winning about the current music trend. Well guess what get the f.ck over it. It wouldn't be a trend if the GP didn't like it so let it be and stop wining about it. If u don't like it then go to a recording studio and make something innovative. ****. I'm tired of people winning about music every day.

''Mainstream'' music has always been predominantly shitty though.

There's plenty of great music to listen to anyway.

They say it's the last song. They don't know us, you see. It's only the last song if we let it be.

Nothing wrong with it. Every year has good and bad music, it depends on the listener's taste, that's why they release A LOT of music, especially the ones not part of the Top 40. It's been like this since forever, they usually follow a trendy sound. If you look at music from 10 years ago you'll see that a lot of songs had an R&B influence, then electro pop, then EDM, then indie etc.

Well seeing that no one is buying music anymore, why should these artist try hard to put out their best work; Specially if no one is buying. Jlo aka  Demi Lovato last record Britney spear glory, just to name a few!

don't listen only to music that charts then

I am disappointed with charts too, the GP has a bad taste but there is A LOT of good music produced today, you just have to look for it

There's that old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." In film and music, especially in the last decade, when a lot of major studios and labels are owned by corporations with no real interest in artistry, there is a pressure to put an emphasis on money, and making sure that investments are well worth it.

This often results in (presumably) talented musicians and singers churning out records that sound and feel derivative. Because it's easy, they know their target audience will hook onto it right away, and buy it. Not to say that all of it is bad. Bruno Mars has made a career out of making music that is 110% familiar to anyone with ears, but it's still authentic and fun.

Right now, television is the medium that is releasing the most adventurous and unique entertainment. This is why Gaga and Beyonce are among the only figures in contemporary pop that I respect. Whatever the result, they are able and willing to color outside the lines.
