I didn't mind this actually, the song is still utter garbage and not catchy but the video was nice. She tried but could've pushed the message harder though.

6/10

This is sort of my problem with the whole concept of this single. She's trying to make a song about how "woke" we need to be, that we're all distracted not to notice what's going on. Yet she does it under the guise of a bubblegum pop song that sonically isn't very different to her previous music, and the visuals of this are extremely colourful and fun. It's totally feasible that this "message" could go right over the heads of her younger audience, or even adults who just aren't properly clued into the lyrics.

I feel she's trying to come across as political but is too afraid of losing her commercial appeal. The results, to me, is like social commentary for Nickeldeon.

At the end, not much people can see the message because it all so cliché and unclear. I agree with @Bebe tho..

I mean there is blatant references to the dangers of this 'utopia'. From the 'American Dream Drop' being a reference to the housing crash,  Katy hurting herself on the thorn of the rose, to the 'Bombs Away' ride being a reference to nuclear war, to everyone lining up to take a 'ride' on the hamster wheel (that's often used to describe people in a dead-end job with an unfulfilling life).

The video is like the music. CTTR is a light, bubblegum pop song with a political undercurrent and the video is a light, fun colourful music video with the same references.  People have their rose-coloured glasses on, they are distracting themselves, they are living in a bubble and they believe they live in this utopia when really behind everything, when you take a closer look, it's far closer to a dystopia.

Not a fan of the video though tbh, it just doesn't seem super interesting in the way it's shot and at times it feels a little clichèd. Fan of the retro-futuristic look though, been wanting a popstar to capitalize on that aesthetic for a long time.

Makes me think of Tomorrowland. That retro/futuristic Disney aesthetic. I like the song a lot, and understand where the video was supposed to be going, but it wasn't executed super well imo. I'm about to watch for the second time, so perhaps my opinion will change, but as for first impressions, it's not my favorite.

Edit: I'm on my third time watching it, and I do like it. I still think there was some poor execution, but I like the meaning behind everything and the color pallete used in the video is amazing.

I don't think anyone on this site with half a brain cell is struggling to understand the message. It's very straight forward.
