I don't really like how the Grammys have become a popularity contest. Everytime, you see the same people winning. And it's not that their work doesn't deserve it, it's because there are many other artists who release fantastic albums and they are not rewarded for their work.

I respect Adele and Beyoncé for their work, but I think their name is what gives them the awards nowadays. And I can't believe people get upset about awards that, at the end of the day, don't mean too much about someone's work. It's great to be acknowledged, but what's most important is to have a purpose behind the music.

You don't think it's an issue that since 1958 only 10 black artists have won album of the year meanwhile Taylor Swift, who's music is neither groundbreaking or original, has won twice?

If there's a racial bias then why  do minorities submit their work? Ignore the awards show and stick to getting BET awards. It's more of an ego issue. It's like making up with a wife beater expecting him not to beat you up instead of finding a new lover.

I'm not implying the Academy is fair but apparently no one has a problem with them unless they don't win their respective nomination. Sabotage them by not submitting your work. That does more than ranting.

Well to be fair 10/59 is a pretty accurate tally for the black population. And that point is somewhat troublesome when you realize that you didn't include any Hispanic or Asian folks... And there's been plenty of repeat winners over the years. Technically only around 47 artists have won the award when you take out repeat winners. So 10/47 = 21%. That's a pretty good representation there. It would've been great to see Kendrick and Beyonce win, but you're getting away from the main point from your argument. Are we suppose to have 50% of the artists winning be black?

I get what you mean. I just think that the way that it was said was a bit awkward.

Adele's album is just a love songs & heartbreak songs, it's not original at all. At least Beyoncé took some risks.

So risks means Grammys? If that's the case I could make a risky album will that give me AOTY??

To chip in regarding the whole race thing... It's tough. I think people dismissing it so instantly ("boo hoo" being one of the first responses in this thread with several likes, for example) is arguably an example of how it could be a very legitimate point. Instant dismissal - not even a counter-argument. It's disrespectful. Being insulting and dismissive when there is a CLEAR unbalance with the recognition of black artists overall - no this is not just about Beyonce and her 20 or whatever Grammys. Two years in a row we've had two records by black artists widely accepted as the clear front runners, and they've both lost out to albums by white pop singers that had massive commercial success.

I'm sorry but no one in legitimate musical circles would praise 25 as an outstanding or groundbreaking record. You'd be a fool to not recognise her talent as a singer and a songwriter, but the music is not new or exciting. I'd love to talk to anyone that disagrees and find out why they think 25 truly deserved this award. Lemonade is not musically groundbreaking either (though infinitely more diverse and interesting than 25) but the project as a whole is so ambitious that 25 feels like a college project to me. I have friends making more exciting records than 25 in their bedrooms.

Thanks for your sensible post sis :sara:

@ Everyone trying to use "but black people win lots of grammys by numbers!" as an excuse for "this isn't racisme!! asdjfkaslfj" do some research please :rip: The grammys segregate black artist into "Urban" areas and overwhelmingly only recognize black artists in these categories. Which is why its rare for black artists to win what are universally seen as the more prestigious awards such as AOTY   Sometimes even albums that have major cross over appeal are nominated in more "urban" categories over mainstream ones, despite fitting qualifications for both... Sometimes its even in direct conflict with the actual genre of the music on the record. Everything Beyonce releases is Urban, even if its not. Look at the history of R&B nominations for white and black artists. When Black artists make music that is even remotely R&B, its R&B or Urban. If they make pop, its still Urban. If white artists make R&B? It's still Pop most of the time :gum: There's more, and I could go on, but im tired af so I won't for now :emma:

my only beef is... solange wasn't upset when any of the other black artists didn't win AOTY.. she only decides to speak out and blame race when her sister doesn't win?? it's shady and shows she actually doesn't care about the racism issue, she's just using it for their agenda.

Well, at least Adele will be missing in action for some other amount of long drawn out years, so all of these truly deserving sore losers will have a great chance WITHOUT "Adele" excuses to win big while she is off adding to her family. Hell, she may not even come back, we've seen how reluctant Adele is about committing her entire life to the entertainment industry. She almost didn't come back with 25 and kept putting it off and having lame excuses.

So that is that. NOW starts the chance, go make this life changing magic music that enhances the current world, that we have just been too "insert any excuse adjective here" to acknowledge your overachieving greatness, because of.  Adele can't be it any longer, so all other lesser thans have equal chance. Beyoncé better make a new album before her twins are due or exactly after, we just can't understand womanhood without her leading us through it with her spoken word voice over and mime tragedy fable performances. We will be lost at this years Mtv Video Awards if all isn't careful and Thank God for her timely performance at this past year's show. Phew...

People get soooo hurt when Adele is in the game and then when she is gone, they don't step up anyway.

Blame it on anything that makes you feel better as long as it's not the plain truth.

lol

The future's uncertain and the end is always near.

Black people make up 13% of the US population. Since 1958, 16% of the AOTY winners have been black.

I don't see what the issue is

Because Adele is a US citizen?

The Grammys recognise artists from all over the world, not only the US. Now, what percentage of the global population is black? Actually what percentage of the global population is non-white?

Open your eyes and you may see the issue.
