I would have never in a million years expected Gaga to outsell Katy after 2013, and she did it with ****ing Perfect Illusion

this world has changed A LOT since 2013

I have a feeling it is a rolling effect still and she will pick up. However it's true what's been said in this thread - no one cares about Katy singing about serious stuff. She may have streaming power to onset her debut views but apparently nobody can be bothered to buy the actual song. It tells more than thousand words

I still can't quite believe this. Even the haters didn't predict a drop this big.

Will the Grammy performance really help it all that much though? Katy isn't known for being an amazing live singer and that's putting it mildly. Unless she does something wild or has the best vocals of her career, I don't see it improving much (and if something goes wrong, she'll be talked about for all the wrong reasons). Gaga performed Applause at the MTV awards and it didn't help the song any. People just weren't that into it, it's that simple. If the public aren't feeling a song, no amount of promo will make them buy it. It used to, but not anymore. Radio played her flop singles from Prism and that didn't help them to become hits either. So, Grammys and radio deal don't mean all that much.

Honestly, if she'd eased off on the political message in the song, she could have had a hit. But she made the song's intention too on the nose. She's basically telling people: "Dance mindlessly to a tune knowing that suffering is going on while you do it." Unsurprisingly, people don't like to be guilt tripped by a singer, especially a popstar. A song encouraging people to dance is fine but a song encouraging people to dance with a sarcastic intention and a guilt trip isn't going to come over well, especially by pop fans. Gaga tried this kind of thing before. It doesn't work. Not to mention, people are sick of hearing about politics and along comes a popstar telling them to stop enjoying life and be political. Unsurprisingly, people don't want to be preached to by Katy Perry, who's famous for making mindless pop songs.

Even when Gaga is at her most purely political, 1) she always presents herself as a character exploring these themes, so there is a thread of story to keep us engaged, and 2) there's an alien kinkiness to everything she does that makes it interesting. Chained to the Rhythm will do fine, and it won't hurt Katy Perry's career. But it kinda sucks because, like you said, it's a guilt trip. The music doesn't take me anywhere.

A song about a school shooter (pumped up kicks) went number 3 in the US.

I think you may be putting too much weight on lyrics in determining the popularity of a song. CTTR just isn't pleasing to listen too.

I highly doubt the subtle political message was what ticked off people who were listening to a preview on iTunes or were listening to the full song on YouTube/Spotify. I didn't even know about that until someone pointed it out. "People are sick of hearing about politics" is an age old phrase to destroy any sense of speech, rebellion and democracy. I call bull because whether or not politics is too in our faces, we still depend on it at the end of the day.

One thing, Applause did receive a sales boost from the VMAs. Sales for Applause went up 31% that week, from 168k to 213k
