Did Katy Wait Too Long?

Before I begin and people climb down my throat and rip my tongue out,

I'm a fan of Katy's, not a stan, but i view her favorably and wish her success.

As I look on the iTunes chart I see that her new song is #4 on iTunes. This is clearly a different performance than her last two lead singles when they were released. I mean, Million Reasons is selling more than "Chained to the Rhythm". So it makes me wonder, did Katy wait too long in between albums? I think this is an especially important question when it comes to Katy, because her music is mostly marketed towards a younger demographic. She's not like Gaga, Adele or Rihanna who have more mature music. This can cause an issue for Katy because her younger fans do grow up and now that 15 year old who loved Dark Horse 3 years ago in the beginning of 2014, is now 18 and prefers more of a mature song like "Needed Me" by Rihanna. Katy's sound did not grow with this new lead single, and that may be the problem.

When we look at stars who have waited a while in between albums, the first one that comes to my mind is Christina Aguilera. But Christina matured with her fans. With her first album Christina Aguilera, Christina was making pop music that was for a younger group of listeners, perhaps 16 and younger? Christina waited over 3 more years until the release of her next album Stripped, and suddenly she had a more risky persona. And that worked because that 16 year old was now 19, in college and being a rebel since they were out of their parents house. 4 years later Christina released Back to Basics. This album showed a more refined adult side of Christina, and that worked because that 19 year old fan was now 23, out of college and becoming a professional. And this growth made Christina quite successful with those three albums.

So does this example show that Katy waited too long and hasn't grown with her fans as they've grown? Perhaps

There is always the argument that Katy's decline has been happening since after Dark Horse. Both "Birthday" and "This Is How We Do" failed to perform at a level Katy was used to, not reaching the Top 10. And then last year's "Rise" became one of her worst charting singles to date.

So weigh in. What do you think? You can disagree with all of this. I welcome it.

I think the main problem is that she is too repetitive...

She's doing the same thing over and over and over again.

They can't scare me, if I scare them first.

How can a song about hypocritical liberals be targeted to kids tho? I just think success fades, it happens to everyone and now it may happen to Katy

Gaga Monster

No she didnt wait to long. People don't want to hear the same thing over and over and that was the problem with this song.

I think there are more older people listening to her music than we think. Believe it or not, she can be really appealing to middle aged woman too

I think she'll be dragged for not evolving so much while her contemporaries (Gaga, Bey, Rih) are taking risks

Her decline was bound to occur. This era will be a step down. I honestly think she'll get one decent top 5 hit and the rest will be cute top 20s

I also highly doubt her album will outsell Joanne's 200k first week tbh

Yeah & it's the same reason the main pop girls are not anymore charting everywhere & every time!

There's a lot of new artists & others that are charting too now! It ain't just Gaga, Katy, Rihanna

& streaming is more important than buying on iTunes atm

(Maybe it will have more success when she'll release the music video)

this, exactly this, you explained the situation, she's not only making music for her FANS but algo GP, music has changed from 2013 and now, and she's still serving the same visuals and sound, i thought she was gonna take a risk this time but this single did not.

IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE THIS IS HOW WE DO

It will depend on her streaming strength. Maybe it's not a hot seller on digital copies (iTunes) but if she finds a place on the playlists she will do fine.

On the album, if she doesn't get a strong performing single before the release most likely getting pretty low sales. She has never been an album artist.

I am almost 25 and offended by your comment tbh. :interestinga:

I hated her firsts albums, only started to like some of her songs with Prism, and I REALLY like this one. For the first time in my life I'm excited for a KP album.

That's what I think... Andd to be honest most of big pop stars 'failed' their comeback in terms of success the last few years...
