I like Elton but his voice is purely the reason I want him nowhere near her Halftime performance. I'm here for the vocals and Elton was never much of a vocalist to begin with, and especially not now :rip:

But "never much of a vocalist"?   His songs are timeless not just because they are great songs but also because of his voice.  He was a great singer in his early days when his most famous hits were written and for decades after.  He has a very distinctive voice, so much beauty to it, and great delivery.  Not some generic vocalist.  Elton has just toured nonstop for decades and at his age, there's just a lot of degradation and sings in a much lower key now than when the songs were originated back in the '70s, '80s.

Are you actually serious? Besides the fact that Elton John had a GREAT voice in the past, even today his voice is extremely distinctive and enjoyable. Search for any of his power ballads and you'll see what I mean... or perhaps not.

And what I said is that Elton was not much of a vocalist, because he wasn't. Y'all responded as if I called him a horrid singer. To clarify, I consider vocalists and singers different things. I believe a singer is simply that, someone who's capable of singing well and is pleasant on the ears (refer to Elton). A vocalist however, is someone who executes (or is at least educated on) proper technique and is capable of some extremes. Elton has a nice voice and he's able to stay on key (likely due to the fact he's a pianist), but there isn't much more in my opinion. He's not an extraordinary belter nor has he shown outstanding flexibility. You both also threw out the word 'distinctive' as if it means a lot. You can have a distinctive voice and still sound awful; you're probably referring to the tone (sound) of his voice, which having a distinguishable tone is desirable because you don't want to sound like every other artist out there. But in terms of vocal capability there was nothing distinctive about his voice? He didn't play around with it much and he doesn't really have any vocal trademarks. I will give it to him for having great delivery, as you mentioned.

Also, you claimed Elton lost his voice because of aging but that's not the case, simply. Of course his voice aged but natural aging doesn't do that to a voice. The largest culprits in the decline of Elton's voice is improper technique, drug use (which he has admitted to) and his vocal surgery in order to remove nodules (the same surgery that destroyed Julie Andrews' voice. At the time he got it, the procedure was still very sketchy). If you want to see the effect of mostly just natural aging you can refer to Beyoncé (her voice deepened and she got an extended lower range), or Mariah, who has nodules like Elton, due to over-singing not a lack of technique, but refuses to get them removed (deepened voice, less flexibility, less consistency).

Emotion is subjective, so I don't have anything to say about that.

That's all. I still appreciate Elton and acknowledge his accomplishments, but his voice has never been anything out of this world.

Probably better than Elton because she's likely done less drugs, actually trains professionally, has good technique, and is yet to have vocal nodules. :neyde:

We aren't aware of how much she smokes, it seems to be periodically and not that often anyways. She's also said she doesn't smoke pot very often (at least not anymore). Elton admitted to being close to death because of his drug use, so?

LOL , you have no idea how much she smokes but we all know she smokes and drinks. Both destroy ones voice. Also we know Gaga has had many experiences with drugs. Look how her voice changed since she started.

It's improved since she started because of her training. The only notable difference that MAY be because of damage from drug use is the deepening of her voice, although it could also be due to the position of her larynx (Dope, Til' It Happens to You), aging or the most likely option: a subtle combination of all three:rip:

The fact is that Elton was a drug abuser, drinker (even today), had flawed technique (Gaga isn't perfect either, but more so than Elton), and received a botched vocal operation that effected his voice. That's that on that.

Gaga could easily sound as poor as him once she reaches his age, but it won't simply be because of aging, like you and others have suggested.
