Cali, Texas and NY have wanted to do this **** for years now. It definitely won't happen, even tho Cali is a HUGE integral part of the US' GDP as a whole, so after a few years Cali could be very well okay being an independent nation. But like I said, it definitely won't happen lol

I was trying to compare it to the rest of the US since they will have 49 states if this becomes true. But then you're right there are other smaller states and there are other smaller countries out there.

This is literally so unlikely lmao to the point of being impossible. Secession is illegal under Texas v. White. The last time any state tried to secede the United States underwent a civil war. Even if California declared itself independent, there's no way the federal government would allow it to feasibly exist in its own right.

But even if it did... in an insane hypothetical situation where the Constitution is amended and secession is allowable and California becomes its own sovereign state... what are the upsides, honestly? Yes, we have the 6th/5th largest economy in the world, and that's often flouted as one of the reasons we could stand on our own, but consider the logistical ramifications of Californian independence. For anybody who has family outside the state (and most people do), leaving the state would mean crossing international borders. Traffic. Passports required. Even if you're just traveling, it'd be a complete hassle to go through (as traveling is to any foreign country) that doesn't exist now.

Beyond that, trade would have to be completely renegotiated. What would Californian trade look like with America? Would anything really be different? Would the American government try to punish California economically for leaving? Do we fund our own military, or do we continue to rely on the U.S. for provide protection for us? 

It's a lot to consider and tbh the payoff is not worth all the potential problems posed by independence, especially when California is so economically and culturally tied to the rest of the U.S. It's not like Europe, where countries like Spain and France have been independent for centuries. California has only existed for a couple centuries and was independent for all of 30+ days (before being annexed by the U.S.). Not a good idea.
