Even Bernie and Hillary didn't like the deal but now that Trump is doing it suddenly is bad and everyone here loves it. Bernie was very against TPP and supported Trump in this.

Actually, Bernie said today he backs Trump's action to withdraw from the TPP.

Bernie and Hillary are against it, Bernie supported Trump in this. TPP is a job killer and would be horrible for American jobs here at home.

From Bernie Sanders

Spoiler

The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a disastrous trade agreement designed to protect the interests of the largest multi-national corporations at the expense of workers, consumers, the environment and the foundations of American democracy. It will also negatively impact some of the poorest people in the world.

The TPP is a treaty that has been written behind closed doors by the corporate world. Incredibly, while Wall Street, the pharmaceutical industry and major media companies have full knowledge as to what is in this treaty, the American people and members of Congress do not. They have been locked out of the process.

Further, all Americans, regardless of political ideology, should be opposed to the “fast track” process which would deny Congress the right to amend the treaty and represent their constituents’ interests.

I think Hillary just went against it because she had to.

They should have made it better and cut out the dangerous parts about the treaty superseding individual countries laws.  Some kind of trade deal would be good, now China wins.

Unless Trump makes a new deal.

I think Trump will defiantly make a new deal. Hopefully very soon. The Democrats and Republicans both want to write a new deal so hopefully they come together to make something fair together for all Americans. It was nice to see Bernie trying to help him out!

Why is it bad for the US?

My country is a signatory of the TPP and here people think it's more advantageous for the US.

It has its plus sides and its bad sides for the US economy. To answer your question concerning the bad side, here's a few points I discussed in detail in my paper (I reviewed both sides):

- The tariffs are incredibly low: Tariffs are the main barrier to free trade yes but today tariffs are ALREADY low and the TPP is advocating for even more lowering of tariffs which is dangerous for the US economy. The US dollar's value is actually surging and the low tariffs makes imports cheaper and exports less competitive in overseas markets.

- It advocates for the use of trickle down economics which basically stems from NAFTA which was a major failure for the US.

- The TPP assumes that trade will be almost perfectly balanced and unemployment will not become rampant. (absolutely delusional). The U.S is notorious for being unable to balance trade (read up on the US- Korea free trade agreement which predicted that the trade deficit with Korea would be narrowed by ~4.5 billion but instead it expanded from 13 billion to 29 BILLION. - https://www.usitc.gov/publications/pub3949.pdf)

- A surge in imports will according to basic economic theory decrease jobs in the US and by extension massive wage declines (and they are already facing a problem with increasing the minimum wage). Demand for labour will fall and workers will have to compete for low grade jobs thus making wages fall.

- Jobs. One of the main reasons the TPP faced so much opposition, especially in the rust belt, was the fact that jobs were directly threatened. The TPP would cost almost 130,000 Americans jobs to Vietnam and Japan alone, thus forcing them to compete with Vietnamese workers with a minimum wage of 59 cents.

- Concerning copyright and intellectual property, the TPP plans to address this by cutting deep into our privacy and internet safety. It directly violates our freedom.

- The TPP was also a closed room deal, meaning US politicians negotiated it under cover and then BAM! gave Americans, this very limited and incomplete plan which saw dangers concerning democracy and even environmental preservation.

Basically small businesses stand to face the most harm from the TPP while big businesses (500 large corporations were involved in the making of the deal) will benefit tremendously because they can afford outsourcing their labour.

The TPP was a mess but I really think it needed amending instead of a complete overhaul. "Make America great" I guess :trollga:

Hope I helped <3

What country are you from?

EDIT: Forgot to mention, withdrawing from this deal gives China so much advantages, China basically wins bigly here.

I'm one Trumps harshest critics but I actually give him props for this. I hope he accepts Bernie's offer to discuss a new trade policy.

It would be amazing for them to work together, both the Democrats and Republicans working together for the people:wub: Although I didn't agree with everything Bernie said, it really shows what type of person he is for sticking around in government to help the American people and trying to unite both sides. I respect him a lot for this and shows what his true priorities are and that is to work for the American people.

OMG same. Although I think that the deal should've been amended instead of a complete withdrawl. But this is wayy better than keeping this deal.

I really hope we get a brand new policy that doesn't only benefit the big corporations but focuses on small businesses too. But with the Golden Sachs puppet Steve Mnuchin as Secretary of the Treasury I'm a bit skeptical that might happen. Hopefully Bernie can push for a better deal.

Yeah, one of the reasons Bernie gets a lot of respect is that he's not really partisan, while he generally aligns with the democrats because they're usually closer to his views but he's very quick to jump on democrats like Cory Booker if they betray the American people. Bernie is one of few who are truly a politician because they wanna do good for the public.

He's said that on issues where they have some common ground like trade and infrastructure, he'd be willing to work with Trump if Trump was interested. I hope Trump takes him up on the offer for the reasons you mentioned,

Oh yeah, I completely agree, now we have to keep an eye on the deal Trump makes but I'm willing to give him a chance on it. And yeah, I'm sure Bernie will be very out there thru out the process I'm sure.
