"Avril Lavigne The Anti-Britney"

I came across this article from 2002, and thought it was so interesting to understand where the music climate was at, at the time.

The article basically discusses how Avril Lavigne's "realness" and punk style is outshining the "fake" and pretty style of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

When I think about it, it makes sense. Britney was at a low point in her career. Her third album Britney wasn't excelling. "Complicated" was major and Lavigne's Let It Go album was selling incredibly. Avril was also having an effect on culture as well. Girls began dressing more like tom boys and wearing ties just like Avril.

The article begins:

"Ciao, Britney! Skanks — er, thanks — for the memories, Christina. How were you to know that, come the end of 2002, the girls of America would no longer be lowering their necklines in homage to you but, instead, learning how to knot a necktie?"

For her part, Lavigne hated being called the "anti-Britney" because she thought that was disrespectful to Britney:

”I don’t like that term — ‘the anti-Britney.’ It’s stupid,” Lavigne protests, preferring not to stomp to success on someone else’s coattails. ”I don’t believe in that. She’s a human being. God, leave her alone!”

However, Avril doesn't hold back on Christina Aguilera:

”Have you seen Christina’s video?” she interrupts. Lavigne screws her face into a yucked-out expression at the mere thought of the queasy combination of featherweight boxing, soft-core ****, and bad plumbing in Aguilera’s new ”Dirrty” video. ”Poor girl,” she whispers.

As far as radio at the time?:

"The teen queens may actually need her pity. Tom Poleman, who programs one of the country’s highest-rated Top 40 stations, New York City’s Z100, has seen Avril wax and the old-school teen-poppers seriously wane in recent requests and call-out research. Lavigne (pronounced la-VEEN) is ”the defining artist of this phase of pop music"

She was.

Avril was real in the early days of her career and her music and image supported that.

I remember Britney slating Avril after she shaded her with Britney saying that her third album sold as much as Avril's first :emma:

In my messy era.

It's interesting how the "pop/rock" sound only works for Pink still. Everyone else has either faded away or changed their sound

I'm not an Avril Lavigne fan by any means, but she made it explicitly clear at the time that she wasn't punk. That was a label other people put on her, and I don't think it's an unfounded label. She was a commercial artist to be sure, but she rejected the pop formula that was dominate in the 2000's by dressing in masculine clothing, playing the electric guitar, spending her time skateboarding instead of shopping. She challenged norms.

There is too much elitism in punk.

Comments like these are disgusting and I hope she's learned better by now.

Spoiler

If she hasn't, then stay in your lane, Avril. You will never be as talented as Christina is or as impactful as Britney is  :madge:.

Aside from Gaga and a few others, Avril is one of the artists where I enjoy almost every single song in her discography.
