Oriane 19,718
A few months ago someone made a thread explaining the song was about Taylor. While I find it interesting, my opinion is different and I think it's about her father. "I came down the mountain Draggin' our love affair Put on a pretty little number I'm wearing you still" Probably describing some love affair she had as a teenager or young adult. "It was a hell of a scene at daddy's feast Nobody saw it coming, but the little red devil in me" We know her father was pretty severe and protective as she grew up... I don't think he approved her love affairs when she was a teenager and it made him angry that she was growing up and not all wise, pure and innocent anymore. "He has a funny way saying forever too fast Don't get mad, can't blame a tramp For something he don't have" I don't know who she's talking about here or what it's supposed to mean but these are beautiful lyrics. "I get on my knees and beg you Hear my sinner's prayer I am what I am And I don't wanna break the heart of any other man But you, but you Hear my sinner's prayer It's the only one I know It sure as hell don't rhyme But it's as good as, good as, good as, good as gold" She's telling her dad that he will always be the man of her life no matter what. She will always need him and love him and is sometimes afraid to lose him because she's not always a good girl. She's going to fall in love with a lot of men and will eventually settle with someone, get married etc but her heart will always belong to her dad. "Got a baby sister who looks just like me She wants nothing more than a man to please Maybe she's in too deep Her love for him ain't cheap But it breaks just like a knockoff piece From Fulton Street" She's saying her sister is the same, she's going to have men in her life too and Joe has to accept that his daughters are becoming adults and are leaving home little by little. "The man's got a gift for getting what he wants He's thirsty when he drinks Gets on the brink, and throws her off" Love can be hard sometimes and these two women are going to fall in love with men who will not love them as much and finally dump them. "I can carry you, but not your ghosts Wish I had the faith, but I don't know, oh" She said that her dad had been changed forever due to Joanne's death. She noticed it when he raised her up : he's sad on the inside, he's very protective with his daughters because he's scared something could happen to them. But Gaga can't carry the ghost of Joanne for her dad, she's her daughter, not a therapist. He has to let it go and be supportive even if he's scared because he's not going to protect her forever. I thought of this meaning the third time I read the lyrics I think, to me it's a very beautiful song about her relationship with her dad.
