GANJA 167
OP, if you think 2016 was terrible for music, with all due respect you should start listening to more than just pop. 2016 gave us: -Blackstar by David Bowie -Blonde by Frank Ocean -A Moon Shaped Pool by Radiohead -22, A Million by Bon Iver -A Seat at the Table by Solange -Lemonade by The most hated woman on this site -Etc, etc etc. And to answer your question, I would say unnecessarily long albums. It wasn't really about albums (imagine listening to a whole album of this stuff ) but more about singles that became super popular and overplayed because of this trend. I'd argue that music in 2016 generally didn't follow trends. I think it was a pretty ground-breaking year.

The real Cheap Thrills (w/o Paul) is the pure version and we all know it.
Swan Heart 7,382
Agree, the tropical sound needs to die, it's so annoying at this point. I blame Drake. (Cheap Trills is still a cool tune though ) They say it's the last song. They don't know us, you see. It's only the last song if we let it be. Gaga's country-rock-pop-folk era isn't over. Katy still has to release. Swift is releasing soon. Paul's cheerleading and poor English rapping abilities added nothing to the song. I mean, Sean Paul is Jamaican, for one. He's not necessarily rapping in English, but rather in Patois. To me, it just fits the song so well. I don't usually like it when Sia has features; I cannot stand the Sia x The Weeknd version of Elastic Heart, for instance. Sean Paul just meshes so well into the song, and the solo version which some radio stations play just feels so empty without his inclusion, but that's just me 6 minutes ago, ApplauseftAdele said: tbh I love Cheap Thrills but the tropical genre has kinda gone too far. CT was released in Feb 2016. Ed Sheerans new song is almost 11 months later and its still the same sound I agree, Ed Sheeran's song leaves much to be desired, but if it actually had a real beat throughout the song instead of just the chorus, I would disagree. To me, it honestly just depends on the song, and I don't know why. I cannot stand Bieber's What Do You Mean?, but I live for Sorry. Maybe when the beat is less mellow it sounds more awful because more is being expected, but that's just my take away from it
PopThatArt 2,193
The edm trend needs to die as well ... I want more of that swing and 50s-60s sound a la Gaga's COME TO MAMA. Love that song. Go see A Star is Born
JohnnyVersace 9,053
But like what DO you guys like anymore? Joanne is too tame, Tropical House is too "trendy", y'all all hate Beyonce and Rihanna, you don't like rap, alt, EDM....I feel like you all just want to revert back to 2011 and have Ke$ha, Britney and Katy bore you with over-produced **** about our last night to live it up and be young. No shade, but it's just confusing how so many of you hate music at the moment, and aren't open-minded at all.

I just used those albums as examples

Songs like Diamond Heart, PI, etc. Personally I love rihanna/ANTI. That's just my opinion, but if I were to answer for the rest of the site they would probably like more funk-disco like I want your Love or Starboy. But I think it's unfair to say that music sucks this year, and also trash Gaga and any new trend that comes about. (Not saying you are, but it's apparent others do). But the thing about the Tropical trend is that it has been here for way too long, its not a new trend but its still going which is why it's annoying
