Lena Dunham has found herself in hot water again, after her recent comments saying she 'wishes' she had an abortion.

The creator and star of HBO's Girls made the controversial statement on last week's episode of her podcast, Women of the Hour.

The theme of the episode was women's reproductive rights, so Dunham shared an anecdote about visiting a Planned Parenthood in Texas a few years ago. At the center, she was approached by a girl who asked her if she wanted to take part in a project where women share their stories about abortion.

Dunham's reaction to the question, she says, has caused her to feel shame ever since.

'I sort of jumped. "I haven't had an abortion," I told her. I wanted to make it really clear to her that as much as I was going out and fighting for other women's options, I myself had never had an abortion.

'And I realized then that even I was carrying within myself stigma around this issue. Even I, the woman who cares as much as anybody about a woman's right to choose, felt it was important that people know that I was unblemished in this department. So many people I love - my mother, my best friends - have had to have abortions for all kinds of reasons. I feel so proud of them for their bravery, for their self-knowledge, and it was a really important moment for me then that I had internalized some of what society had thrown at us and I had to put it in the garbage.

'Now I can say I still haven't had an abortion, but I wish I had,' Dunham said. Why she wishes she had is anyone's guess..

It was Dunham's final words - 'but I wish I had' - that had so many up in arms online.

Even self-described liberals took issue with Dunham's comments.

'Finally something both liberals and conservatives can agree on. We're all sick of Lena Dunham,' Nick Jack Pappas wrote.

Dunham has not responded to her critics.

I see someone who hasn't been relevant lately trying to grab headlines by making controversial statements on twitter.

Then why did you come in here?

Well, I saw this title on the main page and on Facebook. I literally could not avoid reading the header and came in here to express me opinion. Does that bother you? If you're gonna defend her, just go ahead and defend her. Trying to "call me out" isn't gonna help your girl.

Yea but the context is essentially, "gosh, I wish I had an abortion so people would take me more seriously."

That's not even remotely the context. Maybe I need to specify, read it in context without a prior commitment to irrational hatred of everything she says?

Some of the comments in this thread are much dumber than anything Dunham has ever said.

Is she the same woman who was with Gaga during the election? :wtf:

Is this supposed to be shocking? We already had Terry, R. Kelly, Troy, Lisa Vanderpump, Dr. Simon Ourian, Azealia Banks and Perez Hilton.

There is no context to save that comment.

tbf that is not the context. What I get from OP is that she wishes she had not internalized the stigma associated with abortion, that she had not subconsciously equated having an abortion to being a bad person.

Extremely insensitive and disgusting choice of words though. I dunno how she could say this in a podcast. You get to decide beforehand what you're going to say in it, right?

She has explained herself and kind of apologized on instagram.

I love Lena - she's really vocal about issues that are important to a lot of people.

This comment though.. it's really disappointing and insulting to women to have had to go through an abortion. I expect her to apologise and admit her error.

Just saw her Instagram post. Good on her for acknowledging her mistake.

O please, just because everyone else hates her doesn't mean I do.

She thinks that without having had an abortion, other people think she is a poser and she doesn't understand what it's like to have an abortion (clearly) and that makes her feel awkward.

And that context doesn't make her comment better in anyway.

Everytime these lena dunham things come out I always try to reason for like 30 seconds like

"Surely theres some context I'm missing here :gum: "

But then its flimsy or not there and I'm just like

Where am i defending her? I asked you a question, no need to have a meltdown.

You seem mad. Relax.

You insinuate I cannot have an opinion because I don't want to read about her offensive views. My initial post was a joke, you're the one who got offended by it...not me.

she was obviously joking. she has a very dry sense of humour but carry on with your witch hunt i suppose.

why are 3 of the 4 tweets in the OP from men?

This woman is a tragedy. A true product of this modern culture and its strange attempts to relate, to be edgy, to be individual. And they genuinely think they're being so full of wisdom. The real adults are laughing at them. You have to wonder how many times they hear the phrase: "Where the hell do you come up with this stuff?" in response to every ridiculous thing they say.

Erm i didn't insinuate anything, you said you're sick of reading about her, then you come in here to read about her, i asked you why because it made no sense.

Now all of a sudden your post was a joke?

You're still not making any sense gurl.

but whatever.
