JustAnotherDay 8,402
Recently, I've been listening to Amy Winehouse a lot more than usual. So I thought I would make this thread to introduce Amy Winehouse to those of you who are not familiar with her incredible catalogue. Enjoy! Stronger Than Me: Stronger Than Me is Amy's debut single, released on October 6, 2003. It is the first single from her debut album, Frank. The Neo-Soul, Jazz, and R&B is about Amy feeling dissatisfied in her relationship with an older man. The song peaked at 71 on the UK singles chart, which is her lowest charting single. It did however, win an Ivor Novella award. **** Me Pump: Released as the 4th single from her debut album, Frank, as a double A-side with Help Yourself. **** Me Pumps is a Neo-Soul and Hip-Hop song about the gold diggers Amy would often see at clubs, the title is a slang term for the heels these women would wear. It peaked at 65 on the UK singles chart and was called the best song on the album by Entertainment Weekly. Rehab: Rehab was released as the lead single from Amy's second album, Back To Black. The R&B and Soul song is about a situation in which her management team asked her to go to Rehab and she refused, stating her father felt she was fine. It is her biggest hit to date, peaking at 7 on the UK singles chart and 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition, it won three Grammys, for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Back To Black: The title track of her second album, Back To Black was released as the 3rd single in early 2007. The soul song is about Amy returning to depression and drugs after her boyfriend leaves her. The song is her second biggest hit to date, peaking at 8 in the UK and, while not charting, being certified platinum in the US. The song was also critically acclaimed and featured on many end of year lists. Tears Dry On Their Own: Tears Dry was released as the 4th single from Amy's second album, Back To Black. The R&B and Soul song interpolates the melody of Marvin Gaye's Ain't No Mountain High Enough and is about recovering after a breakup. The single peaked at 16 on the UK singles chart and has been featured on many posthumous releases. Valerie: Valerie was released as a single off of Mark Ronson's album, Versions. the pop, soul, and jazz song is a cover of the Zutons original song. It is Amy's biggest single as a feature peaking at 2 on the UK singles chart AND year end chart. It was a collaboration with Mark Ronson who also produced half of Back To Black. Body and Soul: Body and Soul was released posthumously after Amy passed away from a drug overdose in 2011. It was featured on Tony Bennett's album, Duets II, and her posthumous compilation album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures. It is a cover of the classic jazz standard and was considered a standout from both albums it was featured. It meant a lot to Amy because he was one of her biggest idols. It won a Grammy for Best Duo/Group Performance and charted at 87 on the Hot 100, making Tony Bennett the oldest person to ever chart. Amy released two critically acclaimed studio album before her death, Frank and Back To Black. If you have any album tracks or thoughts you would like to share, please do. Seeka 12,372
I need to go and check out more of her stuff. Rehab is amazing, though I honestly use it in a funny/jokey way despite it's serious tone/subject matter. But Amy was a grand and talented musician, and it's sad she died. Reality 72,169
I love Amy so much. She was a fantastic musician with an incredible voice. Unfortunately, her life was so sad, and she was taken way too soon from us. 𝕀𝕗 𝕪𝕠𝕦 𝕨𝕖𝕣𝕖 𝕒 𝕤𝕚𝕟𝕟𝕖𝕣, 𝕀 𝕔𝕠𝕦𝕝𝕕 𝕞𝕒𝕜𝕖 𝕪𝕠𝕦 𝕓𝕖𝕝𝕚𝕖𝕧𝕖
