What is your understanding of Gaga as a "persona"?

She profusely denied any difference between Gaga and Stefani until ARTPOP then things got confusing. I feel like she started with pure intentions but once she caught on she was maybe pushed to do more crazier looks, at heart she was still herself though. I think after a while then she got tired of the gimmick and wanted to pull things back into her control. She broke away from it completely, à la C2C and has returned as a more normal version of herself looking back at her past with discomfort. I think she could have easily kept CrazyGa up but who knows what happens behind closed doors and I'm sure it was exhausting. It's a bit of a headfcuk all of this.

I see Gaga as more of a Ziggy Stardust character created by Stefani and some other people, at least in the beginning of her career, but since Stefani never caught on and Gaga prevailed, Stefani and Gaga are now essentialy just Stefani with Gaga attached on the nameplate

Gaga has always been personally devoted to helping others, including with her Gaga persona.  This has come out only a few times, because Gaga doesn't like to make a thing about how she helps others.   It is mentioned at 2:36 into this Ellen interview

I have no idea. I just know she is a person who has changed and matured (like everybody) through the years, I perceive her first years as a vent, fame hit her badly and, on top of that, ghouls from her past were haunting her. She might have felt chained and overwhelmed by the record label and stuff, they wanted her to be "pop" as much as possible. But I think she was really feeling what she was creating, otherwise she wouldn't have worked so hard, performed so much, even broken her damn hip.

But PEOPLE created the common definition of lady gaga = eccentric/crazy character who wears weird clothes, it might not be completely wrong but we know she has always been more than that.   

As I see it she always wanted to do her thing. Maybe born this way had some marketing reasons, she was already a gay icon so they might have suggested her doing it, but that doesn't mean she wasn't herself (more like killing two birds with one stone I guess). ARTPOP was probably the first thing they (record label, management, etc) didn't want her to do, so the mess happened.

I don't think her crazy self was a marketing plan from her management and team. their marketing plan was to make lady gaga conventionally pretty over all her projects. look at the fame era basically. she's pretty girl with blurred nose in every music video from the fame. things happened to be weirder since paparazzi which is the beginning of the fame monster era and I believe that's the time when she decided to make her appearance more of her own and crazy stuff started.

I chose 2 and 3. First, I don't understand this "Gaga's been lying to us" or the "Gaga's fake" thing, especially from Little Monsters. Stefani is Gaga, and Gaga is Stefani. They're one in the same, I feel like people are treating the two as independent entities when in reality, they're one person.

She's said this herself, that "Gaga" was a way for her to feel more confident with herself, she "created" Gaga because she left that if Stefani couldn't do something, Gaga could. Gaga's fearless, she's confident, she's not afraid to make mistakes, etc. etc. 

In a time when Stefani wasn't strong enough, she made this "character" in order to cope with that. She wanted to get away from traumatic experiences, such as bullying and sexual assault.

That said, Gaga's also a form of self-expression. She's always been an art geek, and it shows. Since the very beginning, she would use icon imagery and symbols (i.e. David Bowie's lightning bolt), and she's while Joanne doesn't have a lot of that existential, higher-up artistic imagery, that doesn't mean that her love for art and her passion for art has died.

Hello fellow introvert *hugs* lol. Lol I was labeled "the weird kid" growing up because I stayed at home on the weekends usually, put on some Janis Joplin, and got out my art kit and painted. I was (and still am) a massive Janis Joplin fan so I was always "quirky" and people just shut down because they didn't understand me. I see a lot of Janis in gaga

Exactly. I was watching an old Janis Joplin interview the other day because my daughter had asked me who Janis Joplin was. She had casually mentioned "wow Janis is just like gaga. She's quirky like gaga. She's artistic like gaga.". That's why I love both Janis and gaga so much. They were both "misfits" who were written off because people didn't understand them who both later went on to change the music industry.
