StrawberryBlond 14,820
The brand of pop she made with Teenage Dream isn't in style right now. Prism also proved that this style no longer guarantees her hits. Who would've thought that immediately after Teenage Dream, Katy's new album was only going to be have one bubblegum pop hit (Roar) and one trap pop hit (Dark Horse)? Her obligatory pop ballad failed and her other 2 obvious bubblegum choices also failed. That was 2.5 years ago. Now that she's 31, an age where a lot of female popstars lose ground and the fact that she got negative publicity from the Taylor feud, this isn't shaping up good for her. She's currently going through the whole 'build em up and then bring em down' thing right now. Her entire Prism era reminds me of the BTW era. The first and third single were big hits, the album sold well, there was a lot of promo, the tour visited the entire world and pulled in a lot of money...but there was also controversy and a downfall during and just afterwards. I think this could be the start of her slowly fading away. I think she's too old for her usual pop style and the public aren't feeling her right now. The floppage of Rise proved that. Pop girls are just really struggling right now. She'll be no different. She's waited too long to come back. I know it's normal to take a break after a big success, but Prism wasn't a big enough of a success to warrant a break this long by pop standards. 55 minutes ago, Bette Davis said: I feel like she's going to pull some wannabe "experimental" bullshit and flop with the rest of the girlies I wonder this too. She has spoken about deciding to not worry about the charts this time. But after Rise, I wouldn't put it past her label to have demanded that she go back into the studio and make some more public friendly tunes for singles. But yeah, if she pulls some experimental stuff, the public will not be here for it. She's only successful when she plays by the rules of generic pop. GagaTheExplorer 3,053
She will be fine as long as she doesn't work with Dr. Luke again or/and people don't catch her working with him. she is always playing safe, and sometimes the simplest move is the right one. She has been working with Max Martin, Shellbeck and Diplo, they can make big hits and her promotional team is always on point Yes, it's hard to believe but Katy is the last hope for pop girls to stay atop

I dont have anything against her, it's just that she represents a music industry that disgusts me. Eh, they are all the same smh. Yes i'm rooting for ha lol Kida curious if the safe route is really the right one. I think that's always the most exciting part about a new era. monketsharona 80,309
I feel like Pop Girls changed in the last year now wanting more album sales than hits... Just a feeling... Getting a hit is harder and harder in general...
DeanWinchester 41,390
The moment that comes I'll probably be leaving pop for a few years and stick to my 70's-80's music. I can't bear even more vanilla bubbglegum crap than we're already getting. Because it will cater to the lowest common denominator, however, she would probably see commercial success. JustAnotherDay 8,402
I would like it to, but I don't think so. Considering Rise's success, I bet her lead will be a moderate hit and the album's only hit, and the album will do subpar numbers since she depends on hits to push album sales. We are going into an era with lots of Urban and EDM music and it will be a few years before pop is really in the forefront again, besides a couple of hits of course. was NickARTPOP

I was actually just discussing with a friend how the careers of the current batch of pop girls will age. Out of all of the girls, we both agreed that Katy's career doesn't really have anywhere to go. Her whole act is built on a immature, shallow, fun and catchy pop. Her genre of pop is no longer in vogue and unfortunately the GP will not take a women in her thirties seriously for making that type of music. She doesn't have a great enough voice or have an authentic connection outside of bubblegum pop to do anything different and be taken seriously. I am actually really curious to see what she does next and if she can maintain longevity. I would actually really like to see her succeed and achieve what the OP describes, but I honestly don't see it happening. Cold as ice cream, but still as sweet.
