Ever wondered why much of the world thinks Americans are so ignorant? You never bother to expand your understanding of the world because you're the most powerful country on earth, and the whole thing must revolve around you. You don't bother to look beyond your own borders and study other countries because the most powerful country must also be the one that knows it all, right? 

You don't even have to look at Europe to see examples of free speech and hate speech laws coexisting. You share the largest unprotected border in the world with a country (called Canada) that's operated fine with these laws in their constitution.

Canadian hate speech laws have limitations:

1. The hate speech must be the most severe of the genre;

2. The hate speech must be targeted to an identifiable group;

3. It must be public;

4. It must be deliberate, not careless;

5. Excluded from hate speech are good faith interpretations of religious doctrine, discussion of issues of public interest, and literary devices like sarcasm and irony;

6. The statements must be hateful when considered in their social and historical context;

Much of what Donald Trump has said can be described as hateful but under these rules there would never be enough evidence to prove it was illegal hate speech. 

However, his comment about Mexicans bringing over "crime, drugs and rape" could have gotten him prosecuted. We've seen more violence and prejudice be enacted on the hispanic community as a result of his speech and it absolutely passes these six identifiers. 

With this hate speech law, Canada has been able to protect free speech and equality because they're equally important. You'll never see someone's cultural identity or religious beliefs limiting another person's right to free speech. It should work in reverse too.

And don't even try to call Canada a communist country.

I refuse to believe the majority of Americans can't understand a level of logic that's been common in other parts of the world for many years. Trump has to be just a terrible bump on the road. Once the DNC figures their **** out, sane and reasonable people will come together and rebuild.

If a miracle like a democrat run house and senate happens, you're already more than halfway there. If these politicians are careful and present their bill without scaring republican voters to protest / riot, I don't see what can stop them.
