Perfect Illusion is a hit

I know the promo was focused around the album and Gaga is an album-seller and blah, blah, blah

But looking back at Gaga's interviews with BBC Radio 1 when Perfect Illusion came out, there was such excitement from everyone and with a view, big televised performances (Applause style), Perfect Illusion could've been a major success. Whilst the song could've changed a bit (an extra verse may have been nice to stop the repetition criticism), nevertheless it got positive reviews and after AHS, Grammys, SuperBowl, etc, people would've been excited to see her back.

Personally, Perfect Illusion is my favourite lead single of Gaga's and STILL today, when I listen to it again I love it more and more. It's a grower, but Gaga needed promotion for it to grow into people's heads and accept something new.

I hope Gaga performs and SLAYS with it at the SuperBowl. I also hope she performs it at the Victoria Secret show, because I love walking to it.
I don't want a lead single of Ga's to be a failure and regarded as a flop, especially one with such a epic beat.

I think I love PI more because it is underrated. Bad Romance got the success it deserved and still does.

I just don't like it as a lead single, I think Diamond Heart, Angel Down, Million Reasons, A-yo, John Wayne, Dancin in Circles or Joanne would've been a much better lead single choice. But Maybe as a 3rd single it would've gotten a lot of praise

If it had promo like Applause, it would of been a hit. The song wasnt a grower for me, I LOVED it since first listen!

This A-Yo could have been great as the lead single then a ballad and then PI.

REALITY

Perfect Illusion is, I personally think, one of her most underrated songs. It's truly spectacular, and it, along with Come to Mama and A-YO, are my favorites from the album.

It's prone to a lot of criticism, and I think that's because it's the lead single, if it were just another song on the album, I honestly think it'd be a fan favorite, or people would be questioning why it wasn't the lead.

It's powerful, energetic, catchy, and just overall incredible.

Tbh, I think ALL songs from Joanne don't give me lead-single vibes.

Diamond Heart and John Wayne are quite PI-like with it's heavy background.

Million Reasons is maybe the strongest candidate, but even that, I don't think Gaga wanted to open with something quite minimalist - likewise with Joanne and Angel Down.

A-YO is maybe a good shout, but I'm not sure how well that would've done in comparison to PI.

And Dancin in Circles just didn't seem like the opener for the intro of the album, it's amazing, but I think it least captures the spirit of the album.

The GP needed it to be a grower - it was too different to pop right now to work without heavy promo

Totally agree. It's not given the time of day it should be.
